Nickel Plate questions: Web artwork shows NKP 8026. Original
series 8000-8199. I understand cars in this series were
renumbered into a 20800 series at some point. When?? Were
they ever steel sheathed or were they woodies to the end? I
model 1964. Any left then? ORER 1/64 notes mention Evans auto
loading equipment, 20800 series might be a different car by then.

Hi James,

The 8000-series were planned for a steel-sheathed rebuilding program in early 1964. The rebuilds, with 9' doors, were started in April, 1964, and completed in September, 1964. These cars were in the 8200-8299 number series.

There were never any NKP cars in a 20800 number series, at least as far as I've been able to find. My ORER collection ends with the end of steam, so I've never looked at them into the 1960s.

Since I don't have a 1964 ORER, I can't tell you how many of the 8200's were ever built (I have a diagram page for the series, but no data on how many cars were actually built). At least two of the as-built War-Emergency cars survived in their original form: car 8166, photographed by Howard Ameling in the late 1970s, and car 8099, which is preserved at the Indiana Transportation Museum. In 1956, 20 of the cars were converted to roofless, doorless coke cars and renumbered to the 120-139 number series.

Hope this helps!

C&NW questions: Web artwork shows C&NW 77542. Did these
prototypes all have Viking roofs? ORER shows plenty left in
1/64. ORER notes suggest some/many/most/all remaining cars had
been daylighted into hoppers for coke service. How many and
when? Please clarify. Growing up in Ames, Iowa, I remember
seeing these war emergency boxcars as a kid in the late 1960's -
early 1970's. All I saw were steel sheathed with Clinton
reweigh dates. (An aside, I thought "CLN" meant "cleaned" back
then) When was the metal sheathing done? Any woodies left by 1964?

Any insights on these familiar and interesting boxcars would be
appreciated. My motivation: I would like one or two but they
need to be original configuration during or close to my era (1964-65).

Jim,

I am away on vacation; it is possible the renumbering of the NKP cars you inquired about happened, at least on paper, at the time NKP was merged into N&W.  N&W added "2" to most NKP equipment and "3" to most Wabash, as I recall.  I'll look through my research material when I get home.

Jim,
I'm looking at page 26 of the C&NW's 1951 freight car equipment diagram book.

There is a note as follows: "SPECIAL DATA:-These cars are the balance of the original order of 675 cars, P.S.C.M.CO. LOT No. 5704. 258 cars were built, being steel sheathed, in 1942 at Mich. City, prior to being froze by W.P.B Order, and are numbered 76900 to 77414 EV."

The original order must have been for about 675 cars. 76900-77414 were the original cars built in 1942 while 77416-78248 were the war emergency cars built in 1943? (year is a little hard to read) under P-S lot No. 5752.

All the war emergency cars had Viking roofs as did the cars built in 1942.
Side doors were "Superior and Youngstown corrugated with Camel fixtures"
Hand brake - Universal
Brake step & running boards - Apex Tri-Lok
Ends - Dreadnaught "two-piece, round corners"

I have a photo (a copy of which I am sending you separately) of CNW 77932 which has steel sides in place of the wood. It is still single-sheathed to the trusses are visible. The door has been widened.

Hope this helps.

Jim -

The NKP 8000-8199 Pullman-Standard series war emergency cars, built in 1944, were never steel sheathed and continued as built into the merger with the N&W. If you have Ted Culotta's "Steam Era Freight Car Reference Manual" there's an excellent builder's photo of car 8026 on page 168.

I have the 7/1966 ORER which lists these cars as having only 22 left in NKP paint but none are listed at this time with Evans equipment. Nor does my 1964 NKP Equipment Diagrams list them as having this equipment installed either.

Surprisingly, the 1966 ORER does list the N&W renumber to 208000-208199 but does not indicate there were any still in service in N&W paint by July of '66.

Hope Intermountain gets the dreadnaught ends correct on these.

Some of the NKP cars were de-roofed and used in coke service,
e.g. NKP 120 in series 120-139 (1959 ORER). These are listed
in the 1963 ORER but not in 1965, so I guess N&W had no use
for them.

There is another NKP coke car series 100-119 listed in the 1955
ORER that is not listed in 1959. Those were much smaller 36 foot
cars, but I've never seen a photo.
