Bob McCarthy posted this to the S-scale yahoo group:
In our continuing research on things SE for our decal production, we hit a formerly unkown (at least to us) set of stencil drawing for the above two cars.I am having difficulty finding information on these O-16 box cars. In a '31 ORER, I can see series 47000-50699, a 40' box car that appears to have the typical 8'6" IH and IW of a 1920's era lower height box car, but I cannot find any photos or other references to these cars in my library. Online, I did find a poor photo of ACL 27052 at the Southeastern Railway Museum, which despite looking remarkably like an AAR box car is called out as an O-16-D built 1926 by Pressed Steel: http://www.srmduluth.org/Exhibits/freight.shtml These O-16 cars don't appear in the ARA box car roster published in RPC #18, so I can suppose they are some non-standard design, but what? Aside: RPC #16 states that the FEC USRA vents were later reno. ca. 1936 to ACL O-15 43735-44234, but this exact number series already exists in my '31 ORER, and does not match the FEC dimensions. This is suggestive of a possible error in the roster. Thank you for any assistance you can provide, Earl Tuson |

Earl,
ACL cars in the 47000-50699 series were constructed between 1922-1926. The cars were rebuilt with steel sides between 1939-1944 (classes O-16A through O-16-E). Classes O-16-A,-B,& -C were double door automobile cars. C&WC O-16 boxcars cars were purchased in 1925 in series 8500-8695. Also rebuilt with steel sides between 1940-1942. Recall reading a Richard Hendrickson post on another list many years ago that stated the ACL sold 50 O-16s to the Columbia, Newberry & Laurens. Do not recall what year this transfer occurred, but 50 cars are listed for the CN&L in the 1941 ORER. Aside: RPC #16 states that the FEC USRA vents were later reno. ca. 1936 to ACL O-15 43735-44234, .........This is suggestive of a possible error in the roster.Agree this is an error. Buddy Hill |
