New Tahoe Model Works Truck

Yes Tim, Serving cement plants I have several 1958s in M&StL paint with both grouped and evenly spaced hatches. They all have Barber trucks.
The PS2 hoppers came after the time I model (54)

I guess I thought you'd have a bunch of 70 ton covered hoppers for
cement -- M&StL and C&NW. In photos I have, it looks like many of them
had ASF A-3's. The A-3's and S-2's were the most popular trucks in the
1950's, but I don't know your modeling era.

Tim O'Connor

Tim,
I don't have any responses that would let me if I needed any for other railroads!

I have very few 70 ton cars.
I'm have to see what I have? Off the top of my head, I have a panel side CNW 4 bay hopper Stan made for me, a Red Caboose SP flat and a Tangent gon, don;t know off hand it's capy. That's it!

You don't run any 70 ton freight cars from any other railroads?? :-)

While I have display models of all these cars the only one I run
is a Stewart hopper from the 66001 series. So, I guess I'll need a pair!
Did I miss any?

In reply to my own question. From the M&StL 1959 Freight car diagram book. Cars with A-3 trucks were:
Box car 2800 blt 59 100,000 lbs
Box car 2500-2502 blt 58 100,000 lbs
Box car 2700-2706 blt 59 100,000 lbs
Box car 2000-2058 blt 57 140,000 lbs*
Hopper 66001-66499 blt 47 140,000 lbs*
Hopper 66501-66999 blt 57 140,000 lbs*
Hopper 67001-67063 xC&O blt 56 140,000 lbs*
Covered hopper 70201-70279, 70301-70599 blt 55,6,7 140,000lbs*
Covered hopper 71001-71039 blt 58 140,000 lbs*

While I have display models of all these cars the only one I run is a Stewart hopper from the 66001 series. So, I guess I'll need a pair!

From the CGW 1968 diagram book:
Box car 15000 series blt 66 137,000 lbs*
Box car 300-349 blt 55 140,000 lbs*
Bulkhead flat 3001-3010 blt 59 100,000 lbs
Auto rack flat 3500-3504 blt 61 120,000 lbs
Auto rack flat 3505-3507 blt 63 120,000 lbs
Gondola 1351-1355 blt 62 140,000 lbs*
Hopper 6000-6099 blt 57 140,000 lbs*
Covered hopper 761-770 blt 59 140,000*
Covered hopper 7101-7105 blt 64 190,000

Did I miss any?

I have to ask what CGW and M&StL cars these trucks have been put under? I just don't recall any...
Thanks!!

Rich,

You're going to have to do your own research on PRR trucks. Several manufacturers made A-3 side frames and bolsters, all under license from American Steel Foundries. This may account for so many PRR classes. I will be surprised if you can find any significant differences, especially in HO.

I can answer your question on the spring package. My truck models the D3 2-1/2" long travel springs. Most previous TMW trucks have had D/D2 springs. D2 springs had 1-5/8" travel. These and all the long travel springs have a 5-1/2" o.d., but the diameter of the bar that gets coiled to make the spring gets smaller as the travel gets longer. The result was, for this truck, I had to make ball cutters .002" dia. smaller than what I made for the older trucks.

Brian,

Which side frame, bolster and spring package are used in your A-3? The PRR had 16 classes of freight trucks using the 70 tone A-3design with 7 different bolsters, 8 different side frames and 4 different spring packages. All but two of the classes were solid bearings. The two classes of roller bearing trucks were primarily used under the F39, F39A and F39B TOFC flats and as replacement trucks under H30A and H33 covered hoppers.

All 70-ton trucks had 6x11 inch journals. Pennsy liked these A-3 trucks.

Are you considering manufacturing a 70-ton solid bearing trucks for an
earlier design say from the 1940s?
I consider a lot of trucks <g>. But there's only so much time.

I just received a flier from TMW for their new American Steel
Foundries A-3 70 Ton trucks. Brian
does a super job on his trucks and he always list the railroads that
used the trucks. He includes
SP and Santa FE for this truck, however, when checking Tony's SP books
and Richard's SF
offerings I cannot find cars that I have modeled that used this
truck. Can anyone specify just
which cars used this truck on the SP and SF?

Thanks in advance:

Bill, Southern Pacific cars that used the 70-ton A-3 Ride Control
trucks included hoppers of H-70-7, 9, 11, 13, 15 and 17 classes, covered
hoppers of H-70-8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 classes, gons of G-70-7, 8 and
11 classes, and flat car class F-70-10.

The Santa Fe book I need to look at is out at work, and I'm not.

There are only very minor differences between A-3 trucks made by the
different foundries (ASF, Scullin, Buckeye, etc.) My HO truck has
Scullin's foundry mark and the raised "ride control" lettering across
the top of the face, rather than across the spring seat lip.

Bill, I don't know if this truck matches the Tahoe truck
but it may match Kadee's 70 ton truck. This is a Santa Fe
Ga-105 built in 1957
