I guess I thought you'd have a bunch of 70 ton covered hoppers for cement -- M&StL and C&NW. In photos I have, it looks like many of them had ASF A-3's. The A-3's and S-2's were the most popular trucks in the 1950's, but I don't know your modeling era. Tim O'Connor Tim, |

I don't have any responses that would let me if I needed any for other railroads! I have very few 70 ton cars. I'm have to see what I have? Off the top of my head, I have a panel side CNW 4 bay hopper Stan made for me, a Red Caboose SP flat and a Tangent gon, don;t know off hand it's capy. That's it! Clark Propst |

You're going to have to do your own research on PRR trucks. Several manufacturers made A-3 side frames and bolsters, all under license from American Steel Foundries. This may account for so many PRR classes. I will be surprised if you can find any significant differences, especially in HO. I can answer your question on the spring package. My truck models the D3 2-1/2" long travel springs. Most previous TMW trucks have had D/D2 springs. D2 springs had 1-5/8" travel. These and all the long travel springs have a 5-1/2" o.d., but the diameter of the bar that gets coiled to make the spring gets smaller as the travel gets longer. Which side frame, bolster and spring package are used in your A-3? The PRR had 16 classes of freight trucks using the 70 tone A-3design with 7 different bolsters, 8 different side frames and 4 different spring packages. All but two of the classes were solid bearings. The two classes of roller bearing trucks were primarily used under the F39, F39A and F39B TOFC flats and as replacement trucks under H30A and H33 covered hoppers. Rich Orr -----Original Message-----

Bill, Southern Pacific cars that used the 70-ton A-3 Ride Control trucks included hoppers of H-70-7, 9, 11, 13, 15 and 17 classes, covered hoppers of H-70-8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 classes, gons of G-70-7, 8 and 11 classes, and flat car class F-70-10.

The Santa Fe book I need to look at is out at work, and I'm not. There are only very minor differences between A-3 trucks made by the different foundries (ASF, Scullin, Buckeye, etc.) My HO truck has Scullin's foundry mark and the raised "ride control" lettering across the top of the face, rather than across the spring seat lip.
