NYC Boxcar stirrup steps

Dennis

Happy Holidays to all.

I have finally put the finishing touches on the Sunshine 64.1 NYC 10' IH Rebuild kit. With the help of Ted Cullota's fine article in RMC, the build went well. Except that Ted talks about using the Des Plaines Hobbies DPH2001 stirrup steps (special two step type) and I cannot locate them anywhere. Any clues from the group? They are so distinctive that without them the car will look odd. Thanks for the help.

Jim,

Thanks for the prompt response. The DesPlaines website will do the trick, but the part # does not match anything they offer. Nor do they have photos for the 47 different stirrup steps they offer.

Does anyone know the proper part # for the dual-step stirrup found on NYC boxcars?

Thanks and Merry Christmas.

Dennis,

I hate to sound so sour on Christmas, but if you had picked up the phone and called Des Plaines Hobbies they would have known EXACTLY what you were looking for! DPH may list 47 "steps" on their web site, bit they custom make only a couple under their label, including the one you are looking for. The part number is DPH 2001! Now that a couple of us have done all the "leg work" for you, you can effortlessly order on line and feel good knowing you saved the cost of a phone call.

If they were in stock, the part # would be DPH 2001.

Guys, DPH is out of stock of this part. I think that's what Dennis was asking.
As far as I know, only DPH carries DPH detail parts. At least I haven't seen 'em
anywhere else.

Tim,

I don't think you are correct, but if you are, I will apologize for my earlier post. Dennis, if DPH is out of stock, as Tim suggests, contact me off list and I have send you a pack so you can finish your model.

Don't know of any other but you might try Tichy. As there is no picture,
I don't know if this is the one I need for my O scale hoppers. Can't find
any in O scale.

Paul,

Unfortunately, I must confirm that Tim is correct; Des Plaines Hobbies was
completely out of stock on the MDT/NYC two-step stirrups when I asked for
them in October before the Naperville RPM meet. I asked when they would be
restocked, and the owner replied that since they were molded on the same
sprue/runner as the MDT single-step stirrups, he was waiting until their
stock went down on those before ordering any more of both steps. When I
reminded him that, if I remembered correctly, the double-step stirrups were used
on all four corners of MDT reefers while the single steps were used only
below the two center doors, which would explain why he ran out of the
double-step stirrups twice as fast, he got this strange look on his face ...

Given that these steps were also used on some NYC rebuilds, I suspect a
number of folks on this list are eagerly awaiting DPH finally restocking
these double-step stirrups, for which I believe they are the only commercial
source (anyone know any other manufacturer?).

Good luck, Dave Sieber, Reno NV

Thanks Dave for the note of confirmation.

I am still not sure that is what the original post was trying to say, but I will concede the point, and again, apologize for MY first post. Randy the offer still still stands-contact me off list cobrapsl@... and I will send you a pack of DPH 2001 so you can complete your model.

The Tichy 3045 double step bottom mount looks very similar to the DPH
product except it's not as tall and is bottom rather than side mount.

I originally bought my double-step stirrups to replace broken white-metal
stirrups on my Des Plaines Valley (Storzek) Rutland box car. So yes there
was another source, nicely made white metal parts, but you have to buy the
whole box car kit to get them, and there weren't any extras in the kit.

These double-steps were used on some Soo Line single sheathed box cars too,
and I think there is a pair of them in the Des Plaines Valley kit.

The steps on the Soo Line car were different; they had straps that mounted flat on the surface of the sill, but the "legs" were different lengths, as one end mounted lower on the end of the end sill:

http://www.irm.org/cgi-bin/rsearch.cgi?freight=Wisconsin+Central+Railroad=131650

The steps for the NYC car had angle brackets which mounted to the outer face of the side sill; both brackets being at the same lever as on this car:

http://www.midcontinent.org/collectn/woodfrt/dssa18052.html

I made patterns for white metal parts of both, but the rights to both went to DPH when I sold the line.

Ron subsequently had a tool made to do the NYC style in plastic, and the Soo Line Historical & Technical Society had a tool made to do the Soo style done in plastic, also, which is what Speedwhitch was shipping with their kits.

Both styles have rather limited application, and I'm not aware of any other source, other than building them from brass strip.

Also check out Detail Associates steps for baggage cars. I don't know if the size is correct, but it looks like a similar unit. I just mounted some of these on an old Rivarossi UP baggage (really a postage storage) car. They are molded in yellow flex plastic and have a diagonal strap on one side, which is easily removed.

Hope this helps.
