You too? I remember with fondness, when I was still young (about 5 or so in the late 70's) my father driving me a few miles south of Altoona to the vicinity of where Antis tower once stood to watch trains (hopefully with a good selection of steam-era FCs in the consist). As I got a little older, between trains, he would drive his old Jeepster around the flats between Riggles Gap road and the tracks, allowing me to steer as if I was actually driving myself. Fun times, and the start of me getting bitten by the bug! I was born too late to experience most of it first-hand, but learning bits and pieces about my hometown of Altoona added to it for me. Not to mention I've gotten some crazy reactions, when passing near the blacksmiths exhibit at the local county fair, to my comment about loving the smell of coal-smoke. I was seriously born too late, but then my mother was still in junior high when that era ended, and 28 when I was finally hatched.

That's analog to the curiosity I had when there was all the worry about the
computers crashing when the year turned to 2000. If we all started over at
1900, was that certifiably a bad thing? We'd be taking a lot more
daguerreotypes of those steam engines! (Yes, I know there was film then)

What's that sheriff? Yes, I see the handcuffs . . .

Imagine all those folks living in sun drenched southern California in
1910, thinking back to Dec 31, 1860, surrounded by miles of green orchards,
mountains and blue skies, the hum of nearby electric railways offering safe
and efficient movement nearly everywhere, full of confidence about their
limitless future....

Which is my way of saying, if I had a choice, I'd turn the clock back to
1960
in a New York minute.

In addition to the phasing out of Kodachrome tomorrow, 12/31/2010
also marks the passage of 50 years since the cut-off date for the
STMFC List's era of interest.
