Rapido reefer

Bill Schneider

With Mike’s indulgence...

We have received many questions about what schemes we are going to be producing on the new GARX wood reefer first shown at Cocoa Beach.

Last night we updated our web site with a listing of the initial offerings, and this information has now also gone out to dealers and distributors. For those interested the information on the cars can be found at http://www.rapidotrains.com/freight2.html and on the paint schemes at http://www.rapidotrains.com/reefer2.html. Please remember that as discussed before the photos are of the first test samples from tooling which is being revised even as we speak.

Also, we have listed road numbers for each offering. Most, but not all, of these are based on photos. If you have any knowledge that any of these numbers or information is incorrect for the scheme listed please contact me OFF LIST. Its not to late to change!

Also, a caveat before anybody else points it out... While all other schemes are correct for the version of the car as modeled, we are aware that the Swift car is in fact a 1936 built car which should have the earlier underframe arrangement with straight side sills and a vertical brake staff. Hmmm... maybe a Shake-and-Take clinic possibility for next year.....?!

Bill,

In your decisions about paint schemes, are you taking into account that some of these cars had Duryea underframes? Any chance you will do the Duryea variant?

Kind regards,

Garth Groff

Yes... and no. Not likely.

The biggest group with Duryea’s was the Oscar Mayer cars. We chose car numbers that did NOT have Duryea’s. Of everybody buys a bunch of reefers I might talk Jason into offering one at some point down the road, or maybe Ted will do a conversion kit....

The only problem that I have with the GARX wood reefer is when I went out to
shovel snow, I started thinking about the cars and started drooling -- ice
cycles formed. I came in, thawed out and then saw this email. I can't wait until
they're released - still drooling.

Bill, for those of us who model only AFTER 1954, do you think
Rapido will be doing any repaints or at least post-1954 versions
of these reefers? I know it can be quite difficult to find photos
other than builder photos of such cars.

In fact the only photos I've found are in Gene's "Refrigerator
Car Color Guide":

Dubuque/URTX 63016 (1960 photo, page 113)
Morrell/MRX 5649 (1958 photo, page 66)

Tim, another prototype in Gene's excellent book would be Kingan/KGNX 3045 (1955 photo, page 49) which, like Dubuque URTX 63016, has the easily added long center tab. They both also have extended pipe ice bunker drains that are easily added - so long as you don't need much clearance for truck swing on tight-radius model track curves ...
BTW, MRX 5649 appears to be a 40-footer; regretably, I don't have an ORER handy to check the length.

Dave, yes, the Kingan is good -- I wasn't sure about it because of
the reinforced sill. And you're right, the MRX/Morrell is a 40' car.

And URTX 63216, also on page 113 of the "Refrigerator Car Color Guide" but still with its original sidesill reinforcement below the door.

I too want later repaints more than I do a 1940 version, although I'm pretty happy with a generic (unleased) one also.

I can answer that!

You bet you will be able to see them before ordering. That's why Bill didn't announce an order deadline yet.

The way we work at Rapido is we usually announce an order deadline, and then it comes and goes and we're not ready to start production. So we keep taking orders. That first order deadline is often completely fictional....

Then when we are *really* ready to start production, we'll announce in a newsletter and/or to our dealers and distributors that they have two more weeks until the real, final, actual drop dead order deadline.

With new tooling, that drop dead order deadline will only be announced well after we have publicized the final samples. We also try to take them to at least one major show before that deadline.

The only problem is that we rarely get factory-decorated samples before the final order deadline. If we did we could probably boost sales even higher. But our factory is so small that if we spend two weeks making deco samples then that's two weeks that we have reduced capacity for painting and printing other stuff that has already been sold.

You will just have to trust that the paint job won't royally stink. ;-)

Yes, eventually, and I’m not sure yet. We have already had several requests for the truck Brian, but have not yet set pricing or item numbers for them. I’ll post something here when we get that information.

Jason,

Thanks for the good news. I believe the painting won't be a problem, though I'll caution you about the coverage problems of yellows and hope you can make it both opaque and thin. Casting in the lightest possible color should help.

I am definitely looking forward to these cars,
