SHPX 13141 help
Peter Ness
Although the photo I am referencing is from 1966 I don't *think* my
question is beyond the scope of the group because I am postive the car was in service long before 1960, just not sure if it was in service as photographed, so please accept my apologies if this car wasn't in this service until post-1960... Having said all that, I've been told by a reliable source this car was in service for US Rubber. The herald on this tank car fascinates me so I am looking for more detail if possible. The herald is not clearly visible in the photo, but from what I can tell I would describe it as follows; Circular; probably 5-6' in diameter; the outer band is red with white lettering - probably about 1' in width; the center - probably 3' in diameter - is white and features what I can best describe as a "yachting pennant" in the center; the "pennant" has a blue background and a white circular center. If this car is within the scope of the group I would appreciate as much info as possible. If outside the scope, any references I should persue would be greatly appreciated! If this car is appropriate for 1959 I have to have one or two. The tank looks to me like an insulated 8,000 gallon - in the photo the car (and a sister that is cropped in the photo) are on a plate girder bridge, so not being able to see the sill and underframe, it wouldn't surprise me to learn this was a 10,000 gallon tank. Thanks in advance, Peter Ness |

It was one of 53 cars in ACF lot 2141A, series SHPX 13123-13175. The builder's photo from this lot number, SHPX 13125, built 11-40, was painted black with white stencils and plainly lettered for Shippers' Car Line. The cars were equipped with heater pipes for use in asphalt service. Hope this helps. Regards, Ed Hawkins |

Many thanksf for the SHPX data! The Naugatuck Valley (in CT on the New Haven) where the photo was taken was the location of many chemical and rubber companies. There was a company called Naugatuck Chemical associated with US Rubber which became Uniroyal, etc., and I've tracked down some history, but not sure if this is the location of the photo, yet. The tank appears insulated in the photo since I can see the end and I'm not surprise it's 10,000 gallon. Is there a resource for finding out to whom SHPX cars were assigned in the 1950's? I've got a couple of leads I can follow up with on US Rubber, but that darned herald on the tank car is driving me batty! If there's anyone on list who thinks they can help please let me know. I can scan the photo in question if my description of the herald sounds familiar. Regards, Peter Ness ----- Original Message -----

In the case of lot 2141A, apparently all 53 cars were originally placed in pool service as there are no lessee data specified in the bill of materials. Regards, Ed Hawkins |

Thanks. I have learned more about this car thanks in large part to Richard Hendrickson, some additional reseach last night on my own an on the part of a few other New Haven modelers; - The company that leased this car was T.A.D. Jones Company - They were in business from at least 1932 (appeals court property ruling) to 1977 (EPA report on State of CT business compliance survey) - They were located at 200 Waterfront Street, New Haven, CT (ibid EPA report) - They were a dealer in bituminous coal, oil and fuels (news clippings on-line) - They had bulk storage (tank) facilities (Google Earth at above address - rail lines are still evident as are plenty of tanks -Ashland and others had tanks in the vicinity) - They off-loaded oil from barges at the facility (appeals court ruling with a NJ barge company) - They owned a diesel locomotive that was serviced by Cummins (1957 appeals court ruling with the New Haven Railroad) - They leased at least two SHPX tank cars (photographic evidence) ...So, this is definitely an STMFC topic...the only question remaining is if they were a SHPX lessee before 1960, and based on the appeals court case in 1957 that mentioned the company owned a switcher, I feel I can go out on a short limb and be comfortable they were leasing SHPX cars pre-1960...perhaps not the car numbers I have evidence of, but for now I can live with that. I'm hoping on the NHRHTA Forum there might be some folks with switch lists or memories... Regards, Peter Ness ----- Original Message -----

As a minor note, I would observe that T.A.D. Jones was, with his brother, a star
football player at Yale U. in New Haven around 1910-20; he was subsequently the head football coach at Syracuse and Yale, and is a member of the college football Hall of Fame. As the Yale coach in 1923, he addressed his team before the final game: "Gentlemen, you are about to play football for Yale against Harvard. Never in your lives will you again do something so important." Tom Warne ________________________________ From: Peter Ness <prness@...> To: STMFC@...
