making your own chalk marks

Andy Sperandeo

Hi Randy,
I've been trying Prismacolor artists' pencils from my favorite art supply store. White, pale gray, and pale yellow are good colors, and be sure to keep the points sharp.

I'll second Andy on this. I've been using Prismacolor pencils for
this purpose for years, and they work very well.

I've been downstairs to my workbench since my earlier post, and what did
I find but a different brand of pencil that I've also used for chalk
marks. It's a Lyra Rembrandt-Polycolor made in Germany. It's white, and
works equally as well as the Prismacolors, which I also have. Someone
will want to ask if there's a price difference, but I honestly don't
remember. So I'd say to try whatever make of pencil you can find, and
don't be hung up on one brand.
Happy chalking,
Andy

There is also another product that is overlooked, white charcoal pencil. Found at most art supply stores, it sticks well and stands up to handlingbut can be smeared to lighten. I use it more than I do the colored pencils.

A word of caution. If Andy says "Brand X" works fine, then he's
doubtless right. But in my experience, not all brands of artists'
pencils work equally well. So don't buy indiscriminately. Try the
brand of pencil you're offered by applying chalk marks to a freight
car before you make a sizable investment.

My wife Bev the art maven says both the Prismacolor water soluable and Verithin hard leadare the ones I use. They are not waxy and don't act as a resist to flat finishes
