Adhesives for Plastics
Bill Welch
Some time back during one of the occasional and perennial discussions
about adhesives, someone mentioned there was an adhesive now
effective for adhering slippery plastics. I cannot find the reference
but I remember it was a two-part system involving a surface prep and
the adhesive. Today while nosing around Home Depot I noticed a
Locktite product "Plastics Bonding System." There is a small marker
like container used to dispense the surface prep and a 2g tube of
adhesive. The description says the system is designed to fuse hard-to-
bond plastics including polyethylene and polypropylene.
If anyone is interested the Component IDH is 1398465 and the barcode
is 7934082565. It was about $4.00. Not sure when I will get around to
using it but I look forward to seeing how effective it is.

Bill,
I have limited experience with it; but always had very good results. I found
out about it around a year ago, while watching an episode of "Cody's Office" on
Model Railroader's web site.

Bill,
This is good to know. Thanks!
If I may add the idea of air honing the slick and difficult plastics first? This is where again, Jacks's thoughtful and clever air honing booth in the Feb. RMC and one of the small blasting guns (Paache Air Eraser, Badger 260 etc.), may add further to solving the difficulty of gluing slick plastics, including acytel. It is already effective for adding tooth to Delrin trucks for painting. It is only logical for giving tooth for adhesives.

Hi Bill,
perhaps you were thinking of message 103911?
I've used Locktite 770 for years and been very happy with it, and bought it from Small Parts via Amazon.
http://www.loctitehf.com/assets/tds/770-EN.pdf
It also works well as a primer before painting -- solves the "flaking handrail paint" problem.
If it or an equivalent is now available at HD that's great.
Thanks,
Larry Hanlon.

Yes Derrell I agree. I do this routinely now outside with Baking Soda since I don't have a Media Booth. The rain takes care of the BS residue.

Yes Larry
That was the message I remembered. I found the product, but given the amount and the price, I was happy to find it in a smaller quantity and price to give it a try.

Bill,
imo perhaps that is one of the few advantages of Baking Soda; it is environmentally friendly and shouldn't clog up your lungs. The other is that it is exceedingly cheap!
But I have never been satisfied with its effectiveness.
Thanks again on the glue tip. I've been more of a wood and brass builder and not so much an expert on plastic. ACC drives me nuts! I'm not crazy about epoxy either altho I find JB Weld rather effective.
Tenax does make me happy.... but then I have to go to deee-tox! - I'm just kidding!!
I'll look for this glue the next time I get near a HD (40 plus miles away).
