I want to know what golf has to do with the UP, Sherman Hill, or for that
matter the town of Buford? It would appear that being the sole owner of such a spread (includes 10 acres) between I-80 and the UP main would be appealing. You could even put in a golf course, if you need one. After all the tourists would flock to such a Mecca, causing the coffers of the local convenience store to overflow. Just those looking for evidence of N&W hoppers (remains?) should double gasoline sales. Doug Harding www.iowacentralrr.org

Since the town of Bruceford is growing, what with the new siding installed last year, the livestock loading facilities, and the ballast pit, the town notables are seriously considering buying adjacent Buford and annexing it to allow Bruceford to continue to grow. One suggested use would be for a power station to provide electricity for catenary, with the goal of electrifying Sherman Hill. Negotiations are already underway with the NYO&W and N&W to provide hoppers of coal to for the power station.

Unfortunately, negotiations with the NYO&W are not likely to get far due to the fact that the UP has managed to take more than four years to unload a single O&W hopper.
Further, the UP is refusing the per diem charges on the car, claiming that it never arrived on the line even though agents have reported seeing it under a coaling station somewhere along the UP line. To make matters worse, visiting O&W officials have not been able to inspect the line to look for the car, being confined instead to the Laramie engine terminal under the watchful eyes of UP supervisors who threaten to “throw the red switch”. Bruce Smith says:
"Since the town of Bruceford is growing, what with the new siding installed last year, the livestock loading facilities, and the ballast pit, the town notables are seriously considering buying adjacent Buford and annexing it to allow Bruceford to continue to grow." According to the Wyoming census for 1953 the population of Bruceford is indeed growing. In fact it doubled from the 1952 census...now reaching a value of 2. "One suggested use would be for a power station to provide electricity for catenary, with the goal of electrifying Sherman Hill." Odd. I have always found Sherman Hill to be electrifying. This is particularly true if you stand near Sherman during a thunderstorm. Bill Schneider notes: "Unfortunately, negotiations with the NYO&W are not likely to get far due to the fact that the UP has managed to take more than four years to unload a single O&W hopper." Well, actually the &%*$# thing is stuck under the coaling tower at Harriman. What little coal it contained is long gone...some pilfered [ according to the UP ] by the residents [ 2 ] of nearby Bruceford. "To make matters worse, visiting O&W officials have not been able to inspect the line to look for the car, being confined instead to the Laramie engine terminal under the watchful eyes of UP supervisors who threaten to "throw the red switch"." Well...don't blame the UP supervisors. They finally found someone who could operate the turntable at Laramie and... BTW...is this in scope? Mike Brock...where IS that red switch?

Strictly speaking, it's not in scope. But then, you're the sheriff, so unless you're planning to arrest yourself for excessive mirth and frivolity, you have nothing to worry about. Those O&W malefactors, and the residents of Bruceton, however, are another matter... Lock 'em up I say! Tim O'
