WFE 68400 - 68649

I am looking for information on the as delivered paint and lettering configuration of the WFE 68400 - 68649 40ft steel refrigerator cars from PC&F. Anyone seen a picture of one? The new Accurail model is shown in a review in the April 2012 RMC on page 82; but the lettering style is based on the 1960 version. What I am looking for is confirmation of the lettering style and the use of black paint on the hinges, ladders, grabs on the sides. In addition, I would like to know if the "placard" boards were originally painted black.
In Great Northern Lines East, second edition, on page 195, you will see similar but not exact cars to the two new Accurail models in their as delivered paint and lettering configuration. This should help to illustrate my question.
Thank you,

Tyrone,

The Form 19 section (Modeler's Section) of the March 1997 GNRHS "Goat" has
an article by John R. Westley on modeling the 68400 - 68649 series of WFEX
cars from the Intermountain R-40-23.

The same article discusses how a 68000 - 68399 series car can be built from
the same kit. If you don't have that issue, you may be able to order it
from the GNRHS company store at www.GNRHS.org.

The article includes references to Clive Carter's April 1996 Article in
MAINLINE MODELER on WFEX cars that includes a pic of the car series in
question.

I vaguely recall (and reserve the right to be wrong) that Clive's articles
on WFEX equipment had one article on wood sheathed reefers and another on
the steel sheathed reefers, but I could be wrong.

Hopefully this information will get you further down the road.

Tyrone:

I have yet to see a Builders Photo of these cars and the only in-service photo I have are in the simplified scheme with yellow hardware and the "Ventilator" stenciling omitted. I do have several Builders Photos of the cars build by FGE, WFE, and BRE in the 1947-1949 period and all have black hardware, BC red under the door, and the "Ventilator" stenciling. The "placard" boards were not consistently black.

I hope this helps.

I went back to my photos to refresh my memory about these cars and FGE/WFE/BRE practices. First regarding WFE 68400 - 68649 40ft steel refrigerator cars and the Accurail kits there are three small issues.

1.) The Route Card tack board was mounted on the lower sill of the car, the left edge approximately in line with the outer or second row of rivets on the panel immediately to the left of the door.

2.) The small devices mounted on the doors and the side of the car to keep the doors open are omitted.

3.) There are no details representing the fans that were installed, i.e. the usual circular surround protecting the external shaft connection and the control mechanism mounted on the sill.

Regarding the black Placard Boards, I found a few in-service photos showing these painted black. Enough to say it is safe to paint the Placard Boards black on a few FGE/WFE/BRE and NX cars.

Although I wish Accurail had chosen to portray details associated with most other FGE/WFE/BRE riveted hinged door cars built in 1948 and 1949, I look forward to building one of these. They captured very well I think the ends, roof and sides and the sill steps are well done. Great brakewheel!

Bill shared a photo of one of these series cars dated about late 1956-1957 with me for use in my WFE presentation for the GN Society. And if one were to look at the two cars in the Lines East book I refer to below, you would see an example of two cars probably bracketing the delivery of the subject cars and would lead one to a reasonable assumption of how to paint and letter that series for the late 40s early 50s period.
However, one never knows for sure. If one were focused on modeling in the period of 1949 to 1951 and even a bit later and modeling any RR East of the Mississippi River (except the NYC system), the GN, or the CB&Q (and HO) then one might be intersted in the new Accurail car and how to properly paint and letter it. The current Accurail car is lettered in a 1960s style, Bill's picture is a mid to late 1950s style, and I am interested in the earlier style as I focus on September 1950. I generalized here but I assume you can get the idea.

Tyrone,

If you haven't already reviewed it, check the article in the Form 19
Modeler's Section of the March 1997 GN Goat. There's an article in that
issue that illustrates how to convert an Intermountain R-40-23 WFEX kit to a
68400 - 68649 series model. Physical changes to the model include
substituting a diagonal panel roof, and replacing the side sill tabs with a
continuous sill using 2" x 6" Evergreen stripwood. Modeling article uses
most of the existing lettering, replacing the car numbers and the herald.

Article also refers to a Clive Carter article in the April 1996 Mainline
Modeler, and an article on PFE R-40-25 cars by Don Smith in the Feburary
1995 Mainline Modeler.

Hopefully these leads will be useful to you.
