It can also be used in the manufacture of Methamphetamine. It was "Red listed" back in 1988. For years (at least in our state) I've been signing for the occasional decongestant pills that contain pseudoephedrine because these could also be used for illegal drug production. It "might" be that since our local "big box" stores don't have a way of having us "sign for a gallon of MEK" that it was yanked. Not really for a purely health of the user or the environment reason. So rather than blame a jurisdiction- perhaps we should wonder whether it is the attorneys for "our dealers". <g> Might add that in 2005 the EPA even removed it from the list of Hazardous Air Pollutants... And there are other liquid solvents that work well-- maybe not as cheap but heck, I figure my LHS needs all the help I can give it. I do a bit of scratch building with styrene and the infrequent purchase of a bottle of something like methylene chloride isn't going to break me- it cost less than many of us spend on a meal at fast food that is probably not as healthy as working with styrene and solvent.. Now, back to my steam era freight car modeling.. Gordon Andrews Modeling the Murphy Branch, 1942 (Probably Before MEK was invented) I have been using MEK as a styrene cement since reading Al Armitage's |

True, but by using Ephedrine or Pseudo-ephedrine which is in Sudafed, one doesn't need MEK. Back when meth labs were using MEK, that also needed acetone, another hardware stable. The state most likely informed the manufacturers (such as Kleen-Strip and others) who told hardware and paint store owners. The hardware clerks that I have talked to didn't know why they didn't have it anymore. I'm sure that hardware stores can sell product that they already have in stock. Jack Burgess |
