Yes it appears to be a Type X. Only about 100 Type V's were built.

Sorry, but there were more like 4 to 5 thousand V cars built, in all, most of which were 6500 gallon size, but a fair number were 8, 10, even 12000 gallons. Regards, Steve Hile _____ From: STMFC@... I was just going by what I found on the Union Tank Car company's own web site. See the page numbered "1901" -- http://www.utlx.com/pdf/TankCarHistory.pdf Tim

I will have to remind them about that error in the presentation. I think
that there are a few others, I haven't looked at that in a while. I have done quite a bit of research into their archives (which are unfortunately rather sparse) and I am quite sure about numbers of X (more that 7000) and V cars (more than 4000.) Someday, I will get it into a publishable format. Regards, Steve Hile _____ From: STMFC@... [mailto:STMFC@...] On Behalf Of Tim O'Connor Sent: Saturday, August 17, 2013 11:55 AM To: STMFC@... I can't quite make out the car number in this photo, but it appears to be

15339. It that is correct, it is, in fact a V car. Series 15000 - 15499 was built by Pressed Steel car in 1911 as 6500 gallon V cars. The spotting feature would be that the heavy bottom sheet extends beyond the tank heads. You can sort of see this in this picture. A large number of these cars were dusted off and used in the buildup and during WWII in solid oil trains. But they were not converted to AB brakes and so were rapidly retired after the war. I wish they had the higher definition scan of this photo available, we could tell the number and other features more clearly. Regards, Steve Hile _____ From: STMFC@...
