ADMIN: Yahoogroup Changes

Mikebrock

Well, I have taken a look at Yahoogroup's feed back results and I can report that the current vote in favor of RETURNING to the pre NEO format is 27024 to return. Yahoo responds with:

"Today we launched our first update to the Groups experience in several years and while these changes are an important step to building a more modern Groups experience, we recognize that this is a considerable change.
We are listening to all of the community feedback and we are actively measuring user feedback so we can continuously make improvements."

More "modern"? Now, that in itself is rather discouraging. Who knows, we may have to communicate via some sort of "Rap" format soon. Whoever wrote that surely has a well paid position waiting for them in the higher areas of the US Govt [ if you'll pardon a brief venture into the world of politics ]. I mean, making "improvements IS the problem after all, not the solution. Sigh.

Several other negative suggestions received thousands of votes as well. In every case, Yahoo responds with some form of "We're working to fix the problem some day." Yes, it is amazingly user unfriendly. At times Yahoo seems to imply that the new format is better than the previous because they say it is. They also seem surprised to discover that some aspect of the "new, modern" system doesn't work.

I would not hold out hope that Yahoo will return to the previous format because I sense that $$ have been spent generating the new format and, thus, someone, somewhere will be in trouble if we users don't embrace the new format.

Even the feedback format seems strange. All we see is the number of votes apparently in favor of a suggestion.

I am actually not complaining too much because the NEO boys have not found me yet...apparently.

The photos section is much slower and more difficult to use.
It's especially more difficult to download images! Ugh. I know
it's not STMFC's fault but I wish they'd let people CHOOSE.

Tim, How do you download photos in the new format?
It's quite horrible --

1. Find the album that you want to see
2. Choose the photo order (I use Latest First)
3. Click on the photo

Here's where it gets fun

4. In FIREFOX, which I use, open the Tools pull down tab
5. Click on Page Info
6. In the popup, click on Media
7. Scroll down the list of URL's for graphic images on the page -- there will be MANY!!

If you click on any URL link the Media Preview shows you the image.
Yahoo uses a naming style that gives you a clue -- I am looking at the
Jim Kinkaid collection on MFCL, and he names the picture files with the
reporting marks of the freight car. Here are the URL's for CGW 7102 --
note that the /tn/ name means "thumbnail" and /or/ means "original".

http://xa.yimg.com/kq/groups/195297/tn/529263233/name/CGW+7102.jpg
http://xa.yimg.com/kq/groups/195297/or/529263233/name/CGW+7102.jpg

( Note that the above URL's may not work for you as you read this email.
I do not know how permanent or long-lived individual URL's are in Yahoo.)

8. When you have found the image you want, the Page Info popup has a "Save As" button.
Click that button while the image is in the Media Preview pane, and you can save it
as a file on your hard drive.
9. Close the Page Info popup.
10. Hit the Back button to take you back to the album to select the next photo.

Now, wasn't that fun and easy? Mr. Kinkaid loaded over 3,000 freight car images
in the MFCL photos area, and I have to repeat Steps 3 through 10 for EVERY ONE
of them.

I am sending this message from the Yahoo web site as an experiment, to see how it looks. I installed this FIREFOX PLUGIN that Jim Cook shared on the MFCL -- it reverts Yahoo groups to their old appearance.

I am also sending this from the STMFC web site. I received an email from Yahoo earlier today saying they had fixed the line break problem with replies. This a test, putting two line feeds here<> I have done nothing with the quoted text, I presume it will appear below, with, if everything is fixed, Tim's line breaks intact. Single line feed here<> If they haven't fixed the problem (replying from the web page), all this text will be run together. If that's the case, I'll delete this message as soon as I see it. For what it's worth, I cannot reply only to Tim, so that remains an issue. Three line breaks, then my name<> Tom Madden

Yeah, they obviously haven't fixed anything. I had to leave the message up because I gave feedback based on the "we fixed it" email from Yahoo and put a link to the post in my feedback. Now I'm not finding any way to delete it, and my ability to delete posts on the Passenger Car List, which I own, also seems to have gone away. When Yahoo switched me to Neo, a little trash can icon that would pop up on every Passenger Car List post when I'd float the cursor over it.

Progress is our most important problem....

As it appears after being sent thru my ISP and pulled into Outlook 2013 on my PC.

You should clear your cache and try it again (on the odd chance you were still using the page in your cache that still had the old code).

Paul,

To create a new message with a new topic (new subject), click the purple "New Topic" button.

To upload a photo, you must know one new rule: All photos MUST be in an album. This is probably a good idea, as it keeps the photos a little more organized. To upload a photo to an existing album, first find and click on that album, then click the purple button "+ Add Photos". To create a new album (and then put pictures in it), click the purple button "+ New Album".

In general, the purple buttons are the ones you want to pay attention to.

Thanks Jeff, but I tried all of that. The "Purple" buttons seem quite logical in their suggested functions but they don't fully work. The "New Topic" window doesn't provide any space to type a message, but allows a "Topic" input.

I did the photo process as you said, but it doesn't work.

I of course went to YAHOO "Help" but coudn't find a solution, that's why I wrote to this group.

Does YAHOO have a phone number? I can't find one.
