Cocoa Beach Hilton

So...here we are checked into the Cocoa Beach Hilton. We find that there is no pool deck anymore, no outside pool bar and no place to sit outside. They are apologetic but we came early to enjoy this. My lovely bride is particularly upset because the ladies have no place to sit outside while we play trains. I can understand that the deck is under going renovation but there has to be a way around this. From our window I can see the beach furniture that the hotel normally charges for to use on the beach. Perhaps the guy with the target on his back can arrange for us to have use of the furniture for no charge. Sorry to complain but this is why we arrive early and stay late. Bill Darnaby |

The Hilton's web site says beach access from the hotel is limited from December 16 through January 6 (today) and that transportation is provided from 9am to 4pm for beach access through the park next door to the Hilton. The pool is closed through the end of January. We're arriving late tomorrow, and I see the low tonight is forecast to be 35 degrees, with a high Tuesday of 49. It was 3 below here in Boulder this morning so 49 will seem plenty warm to us, but I suspect the natives won't be comforted by that. In any event, sitting outside might not be a desirable option for the next few days anyway. Tom Madden |

Just shuffle down the road a few miles to Melbourne Beach's Crown Plaza. I went to a wedding there, very nice place. https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Melbourne+Beach,+FL&hl=en&ll=28.127668,-80.576603&spn=0.003245,0.003047&sll=28.127512,-80.578049&sspn=0.003245,0.003012&oq=melbou&t=k&hnear=Melbourne+Beach,+Brevard,+Florida&z=19 So...here we are checked into the Cocoa Beach Hilton. Bill I really feel for you. Especially after shoveling crusted snow in -9 temps this morning, then walking down for the mail in the -20’s windchill. The mail did contain the latest MR that has an article on how to build a resin kit (got to get that freight car content in here somewhere). The kit was for a gon, a car in which I understand snow could be placed and shipped south till it melted. We could use a few of those gons up here in Iowa right now.
While skipping Cocoa Beach this year, in others years I have attended, a cold snap seems hit the area each time, leaving ice in the parking lot and frost on the windshield. I recall the natives didn’t quite know what to do as they huddled in their parka’s as we northerners continued to shed layers in the lobby. The forecast for tonight is a low of 35 in Cocoa Beach and 31 in Orlando. But the remainder of the week looks promising, like you might miss the cold snap. Just take that lovely bride for a romantic walk on the beach and you will quickly forget about the lack of other things.

Reporting in from the West Coast of Florida it was 68 degrees this morning when I did my daily two miles in shorts and t-shirt about 10 AM but the wind was picking up and clouds were rolling in. It is now 53 degrees at 4 PM w/a stiff breeze. Area farmers, strawberry plants already have fruit on them, are preparing to take measures to protect their plantings over the next two nights. Mike Gruber called just now to let me know he will not be coming because of the weather where he is and will send some photos for me to look at so at least one presence will be missing from the Sales Room. Regardless we will have fun later this week enjoying presentations and each others company. Meanwhile Mr. Darnaby can celebrate that Yarmouth is showing those pesky ACL autocar rebuilds he has longed for as a future release. Tomorrow I can justify wearing corduroy for one of the four or fives times each year! Bill Welch |

Bill,
My SUV is stuck in an 18 inch deep drift in the driveway. Normally able to blast out on its own. My neighbor is going bring his tractor over tomorrow AM and finish plowing the driveway out and give me a pull to get started. We're talking minus 10 degrees tonite. Ugh! Worse weather we've had in our 26 years up here in Romeo, Michigan.
On the bright side, a friend just found some 1930s photos around Buffola Forge with C&O Vans' era livery of first-gen steel hops and gons.

Well, here's the official US Weather Bureau forcast for Cocoa Beach: https://www.google.com/search?q=cocoa+beach+weather&rlz=1I7GGLD_en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=ie7 And, I'll make it easy for you: Wed: 68H-63L Thur: 75H-63L Fri: 77H-70L Sat: 77H-70L Sun: 77H-68L Mon: 77H-66 Tue: 70H-54L Other recent forcasts show temps as high as 84 on Sat and the composite for the area is about 81 for highs. So, I will admit that those highs may be a bit too warm for Clark. However, never fear, I just checked with the hotel and they assure me that their AC systems are in great shape. Mike Brock |

Apparently there is some concern regarding
the fact that the pool deck at the Cocoa Beach Hilton is being rebuilt along
with the restaurant, bar and lobby. The deck is, indeed, out of action and the
restaurant is going to operate in the Seagrapes clinic room during this year's
event, along with the bar. The clinic room will be replaced by a similarly sized
board room on the 7th floor.
In order to provide a "hang out" area
outside, the hotel is going to provide an area on the north side of the building
with tables and chairs. Food will be servged here as well. In addition, a
walkway to the beach was opened today and the hotel's beach chairs will be
available at no charge.
We will be glad to hear any suggestions on
how to make this year's event better than our current planning provides.

Mike,
Appreciate your quick response & update on the hotel. I was getting a bit concerned with no beach, as my spouse was coming with me and she is looking forward to some visits to the beach while I soak up the knowledge offered by the folks in the clinics.
See you Thursday evening,
Gene Semon

Yes, the pool is out of action, however the walkway to the beach was indeed re-opened today as promised. The beach chairs are stacked up just waiting to be used.
Of course, it was 40* and 25mph winds when I was out there (briefly) this morning, but it cleared up nicely in the afternoon as the cold front passed. The forecast temps are indeed as Mike has outlined, and my experience the past few days here has been more sun received along the beach than forecast. Indeed, NOAA is now (9pm) showing highs of 80 and lows in the mid-60s for Fri & Sat. For those so inclined, the fitness center is compact but clean; it presently looks out at the construction. We found the "Healthplex" on Merritt Island, just off of 520, to be a magnificent facility. $10 for drop-ins to work out till you drop. My wife has been doing water aerobics while I attempt to swim laps. Larry Hanlon. Bend, OR |

It's sixty degrees warmer here than where we came from yesterday and no one is shooting at us, so my wife and I are just happy to be here.
