Al

The Red Caboose PFE reefer has one -- a single I-beam.

Sounds like a 1900-1910 steel center-sill upgrade for wooden cars.

What is a Betendorf underframe?  I've seen ARA AAR USRA underframes . . . . but this description is new to me.

A product of the Bettendorf company, naturally. A one-piece I-beam, cut so that it would taper toward the bolster -- a bad plan, as it turned out, as the SP among others found fatigue cracks emanating from that cut. Photos of same are in my SP freight car books regarding several car types which had these frames, including flat, box and auto cars.

For what it's worth, the diagrams show MILW 502955-505138 as double sheathed cars with Bettendorf u.f.

I forgot to add, back in 2001 I asked a question about these two
number series -- were they double sheathed, or single sheathed cars?
I never did get an answer to the query.

  series 500000-502954 blt CM&StP 1913
  series 502955-505138 blt CM&StP 1914

   the Virginian car.

Al, I don’t have a photo, though I do have photos of similar MILW box cars in other number series.  The number series (in the 10/38 ORER) for this car was 500000-502954.  These were 40’ wood sheathed cars with steel underframes.

The Virginian car in question was one of two wood Milwaukee box cars that the railroad bought as the result of wreck damage on Virginian rails (different dates, different cars).

As I recall, one of the Virginian cars outlasted all of its Milwaukee class  brothers that were left behind.

I have been doing some additional Virginian boxcar research with the information I have here.  There are several oddball cars that don’t have a lot of information about them.  One such car is car class BX-14 which was a one car class, car 61551.  BX-14 car  61551 was originally a MILW car but was retired in 1951.  I do not have a picture of 61551 or of a car in the original MILW car class  that 502634 was in.  I was hoping maybe you know someone who is a Milwaukee Road guy that might have the information about the class that car was in and hopefully a picture?  If so, let me know if they can email a picture and/or car diagram with build information, etc.
