Fine Wire Screen Material Found in my Kitchen

By "400 mesh" does that mean "400 to the inch"?

If so, that sounds pretty fine to me!

Before all of you go to Walmart and spend your hard earned dollars on coffee filters, be aware that I sent Bill Welch a sample of 400 mesh stainless steel that I prefer for window screening in HO scale. We are all awaiting Bills learned evaluation relative to its suitability for the SAL car.

My coffee filter is crude by comparison, so I highly recommend that you wait for Bills evaluation. I have a lifetime supply of the 400 mesh, and Im willing to sell it at cost plus a first class stamp. My cost at the time of purchase was 15 per square inch. I dont yet know how many square inches it takes for the
SAL car, but your total cost is certain to be under $2.00 and probably $1.00 including postage.

It's would be good to define the material a little better. Going to
Walmart and using that description would probably end up making me want
to strangle someone [grin]!

I found it in the sewing department. They had a display of rolls of ribbon. The stuff I found was black, and has wire along along the edges to make it stiffer than regular ribbon. If you hold it up to the light it has a transparent quality to it. The weave is very fine and hard to see without magnification. The brand name on the roll is Offray, and it is described as "wired sheer". You can probably find it at any fabric store as well.

I found some ribbon at Walmart that was made of a sheer material that looks just like miniature screen. It is much more see-through than most metal screen that I've used, like the Clover House stuff.    I bought a 2-1/2" wide roll (a lifetime supply) for a few dollars.

I looked at the mesh teabag photo, found the Haney cachet bags and Googled white mesh bag that led to organza party bags. They're all over the internet but I landed at Amazon.

I'll bet they can be found at Hobby Lobby or a party store. And probably organza cloth comes in different grades, mesh and weave.

Bill (and all):

I added a blog post to my blog with a couple of photos of the teabags with their "fine mesh" screen.

Tea wasn't all that great - the material seems promising for window screens.

I needed to order some screen for teh "vents" and expected to order from Clover House but your message about the screen from the coffee maker being better prompted me to look at their site. SInce several sizes were found I'm not sure whetgher their screen mesh size varies or only the physical size of the filter. That is what prompted my question.Which of teh Bodum filters do you recommend?

Thanks again, Don Valentine

Don I long ago lost the packaging the Clover House screen came in but knowing me I ordered the smallest available.

A quick Google search shows there are some incredibly fine wire mesh products available,
down to about 0.001 or smaller wire sizes.

Thanks for a great tip, Bill, but please advise which size you bought or is there no difference in the screen size amongst them? Can't tell from wgt is coming up with the Google search.

Thanks again, Don Valentine...... Who notes that there are still some of these Wright Trak models here for those who want them without delay. Please contact me off list if interested.

Bill,

Harney and Sons tea bags have some of the finest "mesh" I've seen. I'd suggest using that material.

As I wind down building my V9 and V10 SAL Ventilated boxcars, I have remained not quite satisfied with the Clover House screen material I planned to use for the vent doors, enough so that I have been searching on line for perhaps some photo etched material or some other option. I found some possibilities, including various size meshes on MacMaster-Carr and they even had sample packs. But trying to decipher the specs seemed like decrypting code to me. Tonight as I was retrieving my little one-cup-at-a-time Bodum French coffee press from the dishwasher and anticipating the excellent coffee it brews for me in the mornings I had one of those "palm-to-head" moments as I gazed at the press part built into the lid. There before me was some beautiful very fine wire mesh. I went to my Apple and Googled "Bodum Replacement Filter Mesh" and there it was. I will buy two leaving plenty of material for structures and cabooses.
