You've also presented us with a mystery. Look closely at the second full car in..... What are those paired hatches where the end ladder running boards should be??? On both sides and ends of the car roof.... And what is that large offset square hatch or vent near one end of that car on just one side? Then the next car has a pair of sheet metal air scoops, each facing a different end of the car. The further cars have oddities on their roofs as well. While the photo is tagged as a string of reefers, they are not the typical reefers we have come to know.

Mike, you need to remember the era of the photo. In 1912 there was a variety of reefer hatches, covers and hood. Those indeed are reefers, the 2nd car has a single hatch on each side with hinges and the metal strap that kept it in place. The large hoods on the third car back are a type of ventilator that was used by the Santa Fe, I believe. Can’t recall the name, but I am sure someone will speak up shortly.

I didn’t look at the picture (deleted it too soon), but sounds like you are describing Bohn ventilators. Gary Ray Magaliia

Yes Bohn ventilator hoods. I could not remember the name and my library is packed for a move that occurs July 1.

On the far right of the photo, there is a moving train. Is the first car a ventilator boxcar or are there braces in the otherwise open door? Gary Laakso South of Mike Brock

I agree with Eric. Note that they are not uniformly spaced as they would be on a ventilated door. Likely for hauling coal.

I just love the running boards, which is likely why you posted this photo.
It truly is a wonder what Mother Nature can to a single piece of wood. And you
are worried about the scale width of your boards.

Jared, No, just a transfer. Current location is cutting the salary 33%, I can’t afford to stay. Sadly the new basement is useless for a layout, I wouldn’t but the neighbor’s dog down there. So the layout goes into storage. But there is a room upstairs that can become a model building room. So maybe I will get to that stash of Westerfield, Sunshine, etc. (necessary freight car content;)
