era of silver Mobilgas ICC-103 tank cars

D. Scott Chatfield

Over the years I've picked up several old "trainset quality" tank cars that have features or appearance noticably different from the Athearn single-dome tank car that you see _way_ too many of on most layouts. My goal was, and still is, to turn them into MofW tank cars for mine or friends' layouts, which are all post-1960 so that's outside the scope of this list. However, one of my finds was a silver Mobilgas ICC-103 8,000g tank of unknown manufacturer, although this shot of a more recent Mantua offering seems to be from the same mold:

When was the silver Mobilgas scheme in use? The large Mobilgas black and the horses flanking it are red of course. Since I've loaned my Culotta steam-era tank car book to a friend, I can't look through it for any likely candidates. There aren't any in Kincaid's recent Tank Car Color Guide.

Tanks, er, thanks.....

Hi Scott,

My copy of Ted Culotta's tank car book being closer at hand than
yours I have just looked for the Mobil tank car in silver and lettered
as you describe. Unfortunately, as I'd like to see one myself, there
do not appear to be any in the book. There are several cars for
Texaco in a silver base color but no Mobilgas cars. Only black
cars with the large "Mobilgas" in white over the length of the
tank.

Sorry I can't offer something better, Don Valentine

Never, as far as I know -- I've only seen black tank cars, and red tank cars,
with the "Mobilgas" logo.

However some tank TRUCKS appear to have been painted this way

I recall there was a photo of a Mobilgas tank car painted silver with large Mobilgas lettering, in one of Ted Culotta's ebay sales a few weeks ago.

Anyone wishing a scan of that photo, I captured the Ted Cullotta WSRX 1022, a Standard tank car with a repack date of 1939, and I could send it to anyone requesting it. It is a charatablly large file size--thanks Ted for doing us non-purchasers this kind favor.

It is definitely silver, the photo is of high quality.

Yep. But no red emblems. Ted says WSRX stands for "White Star Refining" -- which
was a midwestern refiner acquired by Vacuum in 1930. So perhaps only this particular
Mobil subsidiary ever applied aluminum paint to its tank cars? I can't find an entry
in the 1953 ORER for WSRX.

WSRX 10022 05-17-1939 -- looks like STC (?) built 1919 (?), freshly repainted

White Star (WSRX) is still listed under Socony-Vacuum in the 1945 ORER (and earlier).  295 cars.  Not sure about later editions.

Thanks for the answers and the photo regarding the Mobilgas tank car scheme. To follow up, the model is well on its way to becoming an ACFX welded phosphoric acid tank. Seems its previous owner was a smoker, and when I tried to clean the brownsih film off the model the red horses came right off with the tobacco stain. Oh well. About an hour of work with a file and chisel turned the riveted tank into a welded one. The prototype I shot in 1987 has what appears to be an 8,000 gallon tank, so this model's tank body makes a good stand-in. I might use the frame from the Red Caboose 10,000 gallon ACF tank, since they are the exact same length. We'll see. For now it will be another installment in my "sow's ears to grocery bags" series for the local NMRA division. (Can't honestly call the results "silk purses".)

I can't read the built date in my photo for the dirt (almost most tank cars, phosphoric acid tanks tend to be dirty), but does anyone know when ACFX 7867 was built? By its construction features I think it was built around 1956.

thanks again
