Back in my college days (40 years ago now) I had decaled two Tyco tank cars that had a metal underframe and tank bottom one in SHPX and one in UTLX with a car number of a 10,000 gal car I had likely seen.  They were favorites though not up to the standards of today but they tracked so much better than the Varney tank cars of the day.  Recently I was measuring the model and found that it is very close to the ICC-103 12,000 gal dimensions so I don't know if Tyco used those 12,000 gal dimensions or whether it was just serendipity.

Many of the "old school" tank cars were oversize (relative to typical real tank cars). You are right about the Tyco / Pemco car, about 11,800 gallons. The Varney / Lifelike car was 11,100 gallons.

In TSC #12 there is drawing on p. 306 for an ICC-103 ACF Type 27 tank
car that includes a table of dimensions for 6000, 8000, 10000, and
12000 gal. tank cars.  I have been unable to find a photo of a 12,000
gal. car in the three articles on the ACF Type 27 tank cars in the RP
Cyc. or in the Tank Car Color Guide. Was the 12,000 gal. car actually
built or only in very limited numbers?
Robert,
Sorry for being late to this question. The RP CYC Volume 2 and 3
articles were limited to 8,000 and 10,000 gallon, ICC 103, Type 27 tank
cars.

ACF built four 12,000 gallon, ICC-103, Type 27 tank cars that I can
document.

SHPX 12000-12001, lot 1782, built 1-38
SHPX 12002-12003, lot 1891, built 6-39

All four cars were originally leased by Jacob Stern & Sons for
transporting tallow.

Technical data & photos are available at the St. Louis Mercantile
Library in the original ACF bills of materials for these two lot
numbers. Nick Fry is the POC (fryn@...).

Also, the Museum of Transportation has general arrangement, tank
arrangement, and center sill & cover drawings for both lot numbers.

Lot 1782: g/a 4149010, t/a 3149009, c/s & cover 4149000
Lot 1891: g/a 4153313, t/a same as above, c/s & cover 4153314

Hope this helps.
