USING FUTURE FLOOR WAX
WILLIAM PARDIE
This month's RMC has a great article by Gene Deimiling on building a Lacawanna caboose. Gene's modelmaking skills
are well documented in RMC and MR. In this areticle Gene uses Future Floor Wax to seal the decals. Does anyone know what is used to thin the Ruture for spraying? Thanks in advance: Bill Pardie |

Bill, Nothing. I have used it for 25 years. Spray in light coats. Heavy coats will run and drip. You can use it on flat finished decals like Herald King to help it blend in to the final flat finish. Works welll on Pollyscale Flat acrylic and takes Model Masters Flat over without any problems.

I haven't read Gene's article, but I shoot Future without thinning. My Iwata
airbrush has a 0.7 needle and I usually shoot at 25 psi. Clean up is very easy. I've also applied Future with a brush in spot locations. It has self leveling properties and works well as a coating on old decal sheets. Eric Hansmann El Paso, TX On October 12, 2015 at 11:08 PM "WILLIAM PARDIE PARDIEW001@...Eric Hansmann El Paso, TX |

"SC Johnson Pledge Floor Care Multi-Surface Finish 27 OZ"
I can only find this product on Amazon. One comment there indicates that it is the same or formerly the "Future" product. Amazon also recommends that I purchase Micro-Sol with the Pledge, so I think it might be it. I believe this may have been discussed in the past on this or a similar Yahoo group, but I couldn't locate the post. Could anyone confirm? By the way the Pledge sells for $11.38 or $19.99 for 2 bottles at Amazon. Additionally, I recently tried some Tru-Color Paint "flat" (TCP-017), but I didn't think it made my model finish very flat. I did have to thin with their thinner (TCP-015), as the flat had a very thick consistancy out of the bottle, but I applied two coats. I formerly used Floquil flat finish and have run out. What dull coating do other apply after decaling? -Tom Fedor, Thurmont, MD |

My last purchase was just 2 months ago and I bought mine at the local Ace Hardware for $7.99. The names "Future" and "Pledge with Future" are no longer used. The container will show its clear contents--that is what you want.If not clear, the wrong product.... -Andy Carlson Ojai CA From: "FrederickJct@... [STMFC]" To: STMFC@... Make sure what you are purchasing is 100% acrylic. That is all the original Future was, 100% clear acrylic. It is not a wax. It gives a perfect gloss coat, which is why it is so popular for floors. Johnson & Johnson has marketed it under a variety of names in different countries. In the US it was Future Floor Finish, now it is Pledge Floor Care, same product a clear acrylic that cleans up with water.
Modelers use it because it is acrylic, and works well with acrylic paints. It gives a clear gloss finish perfect for decals. It is thin enough to spray direct from the bottle. And by adding a flattening agent you can also get an acrylic flat finish. Compare $7 at WalMart for 27oz vs $3-4 at the hobbyshop for 1-2oz.

Tom,
I also tried the Tru-Color flat but was not happy with it. I have used Dullcoat in the past and still have some on hand. Several months ago on this list Tim O'Connor recommended using Scalecoat flat finish; I tried it and like it very much; it gives a dull flat finish. AFAIK it is only available in the Scalecoat I line; I got mine from Mainline Hobby Supply in Blue Ridge Summit; I presume you are familiar with them.

For those that want to know just about everything there is to know about Future acrylic floor "wax" for their steam era freight cars, see: I personally have used it as adhesive for steam era ties - I found that tip in a British railroad modeling magazine. I shoot a coat of Future over a freight car after decaling to seal the work. Has anyone added drops of the car color to tint the Future and create fading lettering?

I'd be very cautious about mixing other paints into Future! There's a lot more in paint that just pigments. If you have some powdered pigments (I do -- bought them years ago from Micromark) those may work. Some "flats" are just paint "carrier" with talc powder added. I’ve been using this stuff for many years and have gone thorough it’s various name changes. That said, I’ve never noticed any difference in the product, its application nor its performance. The last one I purchased (within the last year) was off-the-shelf at the local Ace store. I suggest using Testors Dullcote, still available in rattle cans. You need to apply several light coats of any top coat. Chances are two coats won’t do the job if they are applied light enough. John Hagen |

Exactly my practice, John. But one word of caution: Testors evidently does not have adequate quality control on this product. Some cans, I would estimate about one in six, tends to expel "blorts" or blobs along with the spray. When that happens, I discard that can. They are not expensive, compared to re-doing a paint job. Eric if you use drops of acrylic paint, it should not be a problem. Future is pure clear acrylic. I would not use any petroleum based paint, ie no enamels or lacquers.

Thanks, Doug. I'm using Vallejo paints and I might give this a try on the latest freight car from the decal shop. Eric Hansmann El Paso, TX On Oct 14, 2015, at 5:16 PM, 'Douglas Harding' doug.harding@... [STMFC] <STMFC@...> wrote:

I have been meaning to try Future, have some, and have a couple of cars to decal. How long after spraying Future on the car should one wait for it to dry or cure or whatever it does? An hour? Day? Week?
Schuyler |

Schuyler treat it like you would any acrylic paint. It dries in a matter of minutes. Esp if you use a hair dryer to speed up the process.

I usually wait a day. The website shared earlier noted some decal setting solutions may haze the Future coat if you decal a few hours after applying the gloss. Another coat can remove the haze.
