70-Ton triple offset side hopper with "Kiesel" sides/ends

Al Kresse's C&O hopper/gondola book shows the 79000 series to be built in 48-49, roller bearing equipped, rounded end, and not alternate standard, but with angle braces (unusual for C&O in general).

Wheeling and Lake Erie had alternate-standard triples but they came in 48. I'd have to dig to see if they got any earlier by checking my NKP car diagrams. Wheeling liked there doubles about 6" taller.

Ed -

Thank you very much for your reply!

I purchased a factory painted PSC O scale triple offset side hopper on Ebay that had a PSC "part number" on the box identical to those of seven other cars I already had.  The other seven cars all have the AAR standard sides/ends and were factory painted for N&W and B&O.  To my surprise, the car from Ebay, factory painted C&O #79685 and "Blt 10-44" has the AAR alternate standard sides and ends!  There are no C&O cars of that number in the January 1945 ORER, but there is a 79000 number series with no cars (yet) in the right hand column.  Looks like the paint on the model is a phoobie!

Thanks again!  (The other cars are destined to be MP and T&NO.)

A.T.,
I don’t recall any American railroads having 70-ton triple hopper cars like CP 359385 shown on the STMFC web site. Information provided about the 300 cars in series CP 359250-359549 indicate they were built by National Steel Car Co. in Jan. 1945.

Articles about Canadian hoppers of this general type were in Mainline Modeler Oct. & Nov. 1994.

Guys - Since no one responded to my first posting, I thought I'd better simplify the question:

What railroads had triple offset-side hoppers with AAR alternate design sides and ends prior to April of 1948?

The CP car (a Culotta photo on the Steam Era Freight Car website) appears to have been built after April of 1948, as it does not appear in the 4/48 ORER.

Thanks!

I recently purchased an O scale PSC brass 70-ton triple offset side hopper car that was different from what I anticipated!  I THOUGHT the car had what Karig describes as "Wine" sides/ends, where the creases in the side meet the top chord 1'-7" from the top corners of the sides, and the ends are a little more narrow because of this.  What I GOT was a car with "Kiesel" sides/ends!  (See Karig, p.74.)  The creases in the side meet the top chord right in the corners.

The car was factory painted C&O #79685.  It is a beautiful model, but that series of cars was built just after my cutoff date of April, 1948.

If I keep the car, the question becomes - what other roads had 70-ton triple offset side 40' hopper cars with the "Kiesel" sides that were built before April, 1948? Canadian Pacific is a little far from south Texas, and I think they are too recent also.

Thanks!  I bought the car because it had a box with the same PSC number as seven of my other 70-ton triple offset side hoppers, all of which have the "Wine" sides/ends!  I never thought it would be different!
