Atlas FGE reefer
Fred Jansz
A question for our reefer specialists: is Atlas Master Line 40' wood FGEX reefer any good? Or is it just another randowm car lettered for FGEX? It has a wooden roof and as far as i can see sliding hatches? Number 35244, so is from the 32100-35989 series. And has the ventilator & refrigerator stenciling. Your advize is appreciated. Thanks.

Always helpful with questions like this is a link so we don't have to go searching ourselves. Given the car number and the fact that Atlas molds no FGE type reefers, my supposition it is not accurate. Is this the old Branchline AC&F reefer?

Scale would help too… I spent 15 minutes searching for an HO scale model on to find that the only model with these features is the Atlas N-scale 40’ wood reefer model. I’m not sure what prototype those models represent.

Bill, The Atlas, HO scael, 40-foot, wood-sheathed reefer is the former Branchline Trains model. IIRC, this represents an AC&F prototype design from 1927. Eric Hansmann El Paso, TX On April 5, 2016 at 6:43 AM "fgexbill@... [STMFC]" <STMFC@...> wrote: |

FWIW
From the Atlas web site for their 40-ft N scale wood reefer: "This highly detailed model is based on the 40' wood refrigerator cars built by Pullman for the Northern Refrigerator Car Co. in 1930. With its rooftop ice hatches, USRA-style fish belly underframe and vertical brake shaft, it is representative of the thousands of similar cars that were built during the "Billboard" era of American railroads." Sorry guys, it's HO scale and it's long sold out but turns up here and there on ebay. Could very well be the ex Brachline car. Found two links:

This Atlas model is definitely the ex-Branchline Trains AC&F reefer. The hatches, recessed side sill and steps are the easiest spotting features. While not appropriate for FGEX, AFAIK, they are fine models for the specific prototypes offered as kits by BLT. I have several in the URTX/Milwaukee, C&NW and GBW schemes.

NO, not sliding hatches. Those are just hinge supports behind the hatch covers. They open in the normal ice hatch manner. Ah, OK. Picture wasn't that clear. So conclusion is this Atlas reefer isn't correct at all for FGEX?

As I pointed out in my 142066 message of two days ago there are a few possibilities for the Atlas/Branchline reefer w/FGE stenciling but not with the car number Atlas issued.

Bill, don't know where you replied to my Q but this is the only one I found of you in the thread:

Bill Welch Also Todd mentioned it as not to be appropriate for FGEX. So that's what I based my conclusion on. Of course I'd like to see what your opinion is. Where can I find your reply? best regards, Fred Jansz |
