early ORER's

Gentlemen: Would anyone happen to know where I could access ORER's for the 1905-1915 period? I have checked with the NMRA library and they do list the material but it is still in the middle of a move to Sacramento so cannot access these and it maybe some time before they will be available again. I have ORER's both pre and post period so it is only those years I'm lacking. Specifically what I need are the CPR pages for those years, Thanks Mike Barone |

Most of them are online as PDFs (or as e-books...yuk) on Google Books. Most specifically, 82 monthly issues between March 1905 and December 1915. Eric Lombard has an Excel spreadsheet in this group's files section, listing the Google PLAY e-book links. Mike, many of the ORERs from those years are indeed available at Google books... but, not on the Canadian side of the border -- Google knows, and will not allow full downloads outside of the U.S. Searching for specific issues is also a little challenging with Google's search (oddly enough). There are a selection of dates from 1890 through to November 1917, with most issues between 1907 and 1917 available. However, these files are not small, running between 100-200 megs per issue. I think I've managed to download all of the volumes that Google has digitized, having spent a lot of time with a U.S. proxy server (and maxed out my data cap more than once during the process). Stanford does have a copies back to 1885 but no longer permits copying. I was even told that you may not "qualify" to handle copies yourself. They are certainly fragile in the older issues and even a touch can fragment a page in a bad case. When my ex-wife worked there, I could check out ORERs, bound Railway Ages, and reports of the Committee on Car Construction for 6 months at a time (her boss was the Dickens scholar so I was able to ogle original Dickens manuscripts, too, but couldn't check those out!) I have a vague recollection of those days. Well, actually a sharp recollection. And it wasn't that long ago. When I went to the CSRM library a few years back they wouldn't copy ORERs that they didn't have duplicates of. So I transcribed the pages I needed from maybe 30 or so ORERs (I wanted the C&S info from every ORER they had). It was mildly tedious but I got the info I wanted. And actually it was easy to do.

Good morning, Mike,
A list of all ORER volumes so far found between 1890 and 1917 on google books is provided in the files section under the file name "ORER 1893-1917 Google Books.xlsx". There are over 150 volumes included. Each listing is provided with a URL for quick access. The list is an amalgamation of volumes found (not easy) by Ray Breyer and myself and is updated about once a year if new volumes have been found. Cheers Eric Lombard Homewood, IL |

The Barriger Library in St. Louis has quite a few ORERs. I don't know how they feel about making copies, but 15 years ago they were out on the shelf and anyone who visited could lug one over to a photocopier.
