Tangent GA Tank Car

Garth Groff or Sally Sanford <sarahsan@...>

Good Friends,

I just received my Tangent 10K General American radial course tank car. The detail is superb. I am extremely pleased, except for one small gripe. The edge of the "C" in Sinclair just partly covers one of the tank bands on both sides. Consequently, the lettering is ragged on that spot. The "L" also does this, but looks much nicer. I'm not sure if the prototype letters went across the bands or not (rest assured I will be checking published photos). This certainly can be touched up with some silver paint and then covered by weathering, but it is a bit jarring.

I'm still hoping the 8K car will be offered in Sinclair later this year.

Yours Aye,

Hello Group,
My Sinclair tank car that I just received has the same issue. Thanks for the heads up. Barry

In addition to the paint issue, one of two cars was missing a placard holder on one end. I found it in the packaging. Check your cars for broken or missing parts.

Thanks for the heads-up on the Tangent tank car . . . I recently received the Sinclair #15167 and have found the same thing on the lettering, but after weathering I don't think it will be noticeable.

I do have another question though . . . the car #15167 does not show up in my research. Tangent shows it in a picture from ~1957, but I have looked at the ORER for January 1957 and the 1955 Tank Car Capacities Tariff books and could not find a five-digit number for D-X Sunray Oil with the reporting marks SDRX.

Can anyone help me with additional information that shows when a number change may have happened or something to explain this?

As usual, thanks to this awesome group for all that I have learned . . .

D-X Sunray is not Sinclair (SDRX).  D-X Sunray is SRDX and is not relevant to these Tangent models.

SDRX 15167 is missing from the 1955 Tariff for some reason, perhaps sold off, wrecked, or otherwise scrapped.

SDRX was Sinclair not Sunray DX, but at some point beyond my research, their fleet became part of UTLX's in the mid 50's.  That would taken some time to accomplish, so the 1957 date is not unreasonable.

There are 68 cars in the range SDRX 15100-15194 in January 1954 ORER.

The 151xxx series of GATC 1917 cars does appear in the 1936 tariff, but they were second-hand purchases acquired after ~1930.  By my count, there were 71 cars in this particular series that share the characteristic dome volume of 257 gallons.

Sinclair did buy 300 of these 10,000-gal cars new in ~1920, but they were in the 6100, 7100, and 8100 series.

One of the Gerstley photos (circa 1958-1959) is a shot of a GATC Type 17 SDRX #15145.

The series 14800-15803 still shows
7 tank cars with SDRX reporting marks in the 1963 ORER,
and
5 cars in the 1965 ORER. Evidently so old why bother repainting or relettering them? :-)

UTLX #72815 (photographed in December 1963) was a GATC Type 17 - it might even be one of
the Sinclair tanks with a full repaint. :-\ The number series that includes it still exists in the 1970
tariff book with sister cars #72810 and #72814 shown - the same size, but of unknown vintage.

I would love to know if any Type 17's made it to 1971...

The Humble tank car should have a blue outline outside the red logo if it’s supposed to be a car repainted between 1935 and 1945. This can be easily added with a decal if it gets under my skin too much.

After the Second World War Humble changed this to the familiar white oval with a blue outline and red lettering to resemble the other Standard Oil of New Jersey properties such as Esso. (Standard Oil of New Jersey owned 50% of Humble since 1919 and bought the rest circa 1959).

Steve,

Thanks for pointing out my error . . . I obviously transposed letters when looking up the reporting marks . . . damn it sucks getting old.

I found it in the ORER and can move on to weathering . . .

Thanks again,
