NYS&W 400 series PS1 Boxcars

John Sykes III

In November 1952, Susquehanna bought 35 40' PS1 boxcars from Pullman.  By the January 1954 ORER they were down to 30.  Then, in September 1956, they sold 25 to MONON and finally ended up with the 401 & 402 as the sole survivors in the April 1958 ORER.  Anyone know what happened to the other 8 cars?  (the 5 that disappeared before 1954 and the 3 after).

John,
The 8 cars went to Lehigh & New England in two groups:

3 cars in late 1956, LNE 9051-9053 (former NYS&W 430-432, XM service).
5 cars in late 1957, LNE 9054-9058 (former NYS&W 403-407, BX service).

These 8 cars stayed on the LNE roster for just a short time with 4 cars removed 4th quarter 1959 and the last 4 cars removed first quarter 1960. I don’t know where the 8 cars went when LNE vacated them. Hope this helps to answer your question.

I have a shot of SOO 2154, an ex-LNE PS-1 acquired in 1960. The car was
part of series 1700-2238 - a total of 298 cars in the 1963 ORER - acquired
second hand. My notes say the car is from USRE, but there is a "builder"
stencil I don't recognize - arched lettering but not PS nor ACF. Maybe it's
an early USRE stencil before they chose the "48 states" logo.

I do not know whether the entire series were PS-1 box cars, but all of them
were listed as 3885 cuft and 10'6" IH. The series did not exist in 1959, so
the whole series is definitely second hand box cars. Most of the cars were
still in the Soo roster in 1972 BTW. :-)

Tim,
These PS-1s bought 2nd hand by Soo Line were the original LNE 8751-9050, 300 cars built 3-5/56 in Pullman-Standard lot 8287. Soo Line purchased the cars in late 1959 to early 1960 after USRE refurbished them. The total series became Soo Line 1700-2298, even numbers only. The upper-arched part of badge is UNITED STATES RAILWAY EQUIP’T CO. along with horizontal stencils BLUE ISLAND, ILL. below the arched stencils.

A photo of Soo Line 2240 shows this badge and reweigh stencils NY 2-60.

Relating this to the original question about the other 8 cars that LNE obtained 2nd hand from NYS&W in 1956-1957, it’s possible the LNE 9051-9058 PS-1 box cars also went to USRE along with 8751-9050. However, I’ve not been able to trace where they went after 1/60.

Ed:

That sounds semi-logical since LNE picked up 8 PS-1s after their initial order of 300 from PS (in 1956, I believe).  However, 5 of the PS1s left the Susquehanna ORER roster BEFORE January 1954 (there are only 30 cars on that roster).  I don't have a 1954 passenger ORER so don't know if the Susquehanna moved them to the passenger roster (i.e., reclassified as BX), or what.  The cars were not used in interchange service, so I don't know why they were in the ORER to begin with.

Ed:

P.S.  Actually that does make sense, now that I think about it.  Susquehanna did use some of the PS1 cars as BX with steam and signal lines added. So taking them off of the freight roster jives.  Then if they sold them to LNE in the late '50s they would be gone for good.  And,  most importantly, the numbers do add up!

John are you saying LNE PS-1s in total weren’t used in interchange or just the BX ones? I have photos of them on the Pennsylvania Middle Division. I’m at work so I can’t check the pics for numbers.

Hello John,

At the moment I am traveling so don't have any documentation handy, but if I am not mistaken, the 40 Susquehanna box cars you are seeing were Mather cast offs from the Erie used in express service. The NYS&W had no interchange cars and only had the Mather box cars and some hoppers used in on line service.  The 8 box cars you are talking about were purchased from the Lehigh Valley, but only had 6' doors and were not wanted by shippers, with all but 2 being sold off fairly quickly.  Westerfield makes a nice model of the Mather box car, and I have 4 of them in express service on my '49 based Susquehanna layout.
