reefer MDT 13755 on display at the Fulton County Museum

Hi List Members,
While this is way past my own era of interest, I
thought maybe some members might be interested in seeing the reefer MDT 13755
which is on display at the Fulton County Museum in Indiana.
I stumbled upon it while driving from Indianapolis
to South Bend.
It has been repainted grey, but the original
lettering is still barely discernable under the new paint.

Claus Thank You for sharing. Question? On the first photo of MDT 13755 on the right side near the “A” end the is a small rectangle with a lever located on the sill. Can provide name if any and purpose?

Looks like the lever is to engage the wheel that rides on top of the railroad wheel and is connected to the generator that runs the circulating fans in the ice bunkers.

In the 1990's there was a whole string of ex-MDT ice reefers parked at the east end of the NYC (Conrail) Selkirk NY yard. I wonder what became of them? The set included a car with 'double hinge' doors from the 1950's. Someday I'll dig out the negatives and scan them. Maybe. ;-)

You're talking about the mechanical fan drive, right? Most other major refrigerator lines located it on the left-hand truck on the side of the car as you stood facing the side with the fan drive. My MDT book is not here any more, so I can't look it up. The ART book, which is still here, says these fan drives were usually located at the A end of the car, which is true here. It's just on the opposite side of the car from many of the others.

Hi Tim, Your comment brings the question of what good woud such an appliance be if the car were NOT in revenue service? Also, your photo of 11945 seems to show a galvanized roof that was not painted. Is that correct and can you provide a date for your photo? Thank you. Don Valentine |

I thought it might be a LOCK of some kind - that car was STATIONARY at that location for a very long time. Photos taken at least two years apart show it in precisely the same spot, rusted to the rail. It was in use for storage. On 2/16/2020 6:36 AM, Donald B. Valentine via Groups.Io wrote:
