I purchased the subject DVD with the intent of loading the database to my desktop and searching across issues for freight car data like I do with the 40 year MR archive. Unfortunately, neither seems possible, as the disk is copy protected, and the only search function is for each individual monthly issue open as a pdf file. Even more objectionable to me is that the archive comes on two DVDs, meaning one must physically change DVDs to view the entire archive. None of this was revealed prior to purchase. Caveat Emptor!!

Caveat Emptor!!It's typical, now that Uncle Al and his friends are gone. The first ten years in PDF on an unlocked disc would suit me better; the earlier disc distribution of the archive as well. As to the on-line archive, I think I have it all on a pair of 256GB flash sticks, and as soon as I can afford one of the recent 1TB solid state USB drives, there it's going. I don't know if this will work with the 2010-2019 archive, however I installed the 1934-1999 archive from the four (!) DVDs onto a USB 64MB "stick." I then access the entire archive from there. It is possible to install multiple times, as I have discovered when the first 64GB "stick" quit on me. (They are not as stable as advertised.)
I went with that solution so that I could carry the stick with me to bring on trips, for downtime. As noted previously by myself and others, the resolution of these digitized issues is not all that great. I wonder if there has been any improvement with the 2010-2019 version. Cheers, George Irwin |

As I said, the discs are copy protected. You cannot copy them to any memory device.

You need to strip the Digital Rights Management (DRM)

The DVD files open in Adobe Reader. That’s not the problem. There is no link between issues for global search, and there is no cumulative index for manual search. In fact, there is no search engine except the Adobe Reader search engine for searches within the open file, i.e. one issue at a time.

My Desktop Google Search can read my PDF files - but it can't get past DRM from Kalmbach. I scan great reference articles (like Tony Thompson's RMC SP article from 2-1993) and turn into PDF. The problem with that is that as interests and needs change, I have to go back through the magazines to find the newly relevant material. I was hoping the ten year archive would facilitate that search. Content for my areas of interest has really slipped in both magazines – MR is to basic and RMC is moving past my cutoff era for most content. The latest MR is pretty thin. I’m debating with myself about letting my subscription expire.

I know Mike Schafer of RMC fairly well, and what he says is that he can’t publish what he doesn’t have…That said, I wonder about the direction of the magazine under the new editor, Otto Vondrak. Perhaps he’s pushing for more contemporary modeling coverage. I know the new editor got a lot of reader blow-back when he took the back and forth between Mike and Bill, the “Look Both Ways” column, and pushed it to the back of the magazine, and I think shortened it quite a bit. I preferred the previous format and always enjoyed reading their differing approaches or opinions.

RMC has some 1950's material, several articles, some even requested by former editor Stephen Priest. It appears to me the magazine has gone in a different direction. That being said I suppose it is hard for Otto to know about all of the prior submissions
