My superglue spouts stick to the caps

I'm using 2 brands of superglue currently, Scotch and Bob Smith. When I tried to use them today, both of the spouts stuck to the caps. Even pliers wouldn't pull the spouts loose, so I was left with 2 bottles of open superglue with no caps -- useless.
Has this happened to any one else? Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening again?

Hi Jim,

I've had superglue glue caps on that took lots of effort to break off, and also superglue that set up hard in a bottle.  I currently use Loctite Super Glue Ultra Liquid Control.  It comes in a squeeze bottle with a twist cap that never gets stuck, and I never have to clear the nozzle.  With most other brands, I have to drill out the hardened glue in the applicator nozzle before each use.  The Loctite seems to be a medium thin glue, and it works well for me in most applications.  Bill Welch swears by Duro Super Glue sold in Walmart and other big box stores, IIRC.  It comes in a 4 tube pack and it lasts and lasts without hardening.

I’m sure you will get a variety of answers to this question. My answer is, YES. The thing to do is to buy the small tubes instead of bottles. When you buy superglue in bottles several bad things happen – the tube gets stuck and becomes useless (as you experienced), the glue begins to thicken  with age, and after along enough time the glue ultimately solidifies inside the bottle.
 
The small tubes are VERY small, holding only a fractional ounce each. You open one, use it for a while, then throw it away when it is empty or when it is less than pristine. They are cheap, REAL CHEAP, sometime three tubes for a buck, so it’s not like you cannot afford to toss one that is less than wonderful. Since you throw them away often, they are never around long enough for the glue to thicken or solidify.

      One thing I do is right after I get a drop out . I tap the base of the bottle on a hard surface. Thanks,Barry

Try building more models, faster so the glue will be used up before it can age 😉

 

BTW I use Loctite and it rarely clogs the cap – but I won’t say “never”.

I highly recommend putting all superglues, when not in use, in the refrigerator. Not only do they last indefinitely when chilled, but I no longer have problems with the nozzles sticking, etc. Les

Todd is using it well as I use the same Loctite Super Glue Ultra Control with the black cap and the ultra control Loctite gel with the blue cap.   I have had them get stuck and broken off several tops attempting to remove them with pliers.   It happens due to glue remaining at the top of the nozzle after putting the cap back on.  I started to touch the nozzle to a paper towel before putting on the cap or just leaving the bottle set fo a time before putting cap on and have not had it happen since.  On the gel I have to scrape the nozzle ever so often with a single edge razor to remove some dried glue. And, as Todd said never have had to clear the nozzle.

 On Zap which I also use I have had stuck caps and have to clear nozzle now and then.  Again, since touching nozzle to paper towel to remove any remaining glue no stuck caps.

I also had a top break off the Loctite Ultra Liquid Control Glue.  I found that you can unscrew the remaining top from the base and salvage some of what's left.  It comes out in a puddle and the broken top serves as a new "cap."  Not sure how long this will hold up, but I did get several more uses out of the bottle.

I've used the various Zap varieties for years.
The caps never stick, but I sometimes have to ream out the spout - no big deal.

I have used the Locktite glues (it does come in several viscosities, including gel) for as many years as it’s been available.  But I also randomly buy other versions of superglue to try them out.  About two months ago I opened one of them that had, first of all been on my other desk for at least two years,  It’s the one in the photo, four 0.01 oz tubes, and not only was it still good (some superglue goes bad before I open them to begin with), it has remained, open on my desk sitting in a plastic drink cover for at least five weeks and STILL is good.  The spout has remained open (until this morning), but I reamed it out with a wire and it’s good to go.  As others have done, I tend to whack it down to clear the spout, but as often as not, I forget to do that. 

 

It is amazing how many joints 0.01 oz. will join.

Super Glue Storage

Many of us are at an age where we have a forest of pill bottles in our medicine cabinets. And many of these bottles contain a desiccant silica gel packet or capsule.

I save these and place them in a freeze-quality baggie along with my ACC glues. This is a bit more convenient than keeping them in the freezer and works just as well in my experience.

Most Dollar Tree outlets (somehow still considered "essential" here in Western New York) sell four small tubes for -- yes, a dollar.  I consider them to be "single use" containers.  Use caution with these as frequently the entire contents comes out with one small squeeze. 

Harbor Freight has three slightly larger tubes for that same dollar.
