Rapido PRR X31A Boxcar in HO

Gerald Henriksen

They have just sent out an email announcing this car, both single and
double door, with tooling almost complete.

They will be doing a Facebook Live today at 6pm EDT to discuss them.

Yay!

I'll be venturing out to my LHS tomorrow to pick up the FB-2 units that finally arrived, so maybe I'll reserve a few of these while I'm at it.

How many think it's coincidence that the Rapido announcement comes the day before Bruce is giving a talk of that very car type?

I please the 5th!  In reality, it was about 90% coincidence.

According to Rapido the X31a boxcar is still in design status. I would expect them in 2nd quarter 2021 at earliest.

The announcement newsletter from Friday said tooling is almost
complete and had pictures of some of the tooling. Expected order
deadline is late summer or early fall

The Facebook Live Friday it was indicated they expect first samples
hopefully by the end of this month.

Will Rapido paint them for Northern Pacific as ex-DT&I X31b?

Different roof... too bad :-(

All-

Since Rapido is still in the early design phases they could add the X31b and gain a couple more road names and additional paint schemes.

Perhaps the PRR people can chime in on any more secondhand or subsequent sales of the X31 types…..

(hoping that we will see them in N Scale in the future)

Is there documentation for the "inset" vs "flush" roof feature on the X31/X32 cars ? All of the NP
cars I've seen had the "flush" roofs.

Tim,

In addition to my clinic? ;) Yes, the RP Cyc did articles on the PRR cars, the cars PRR sold and the non-PRR clones or near clones.

Charlie,

The X31B/C would need a new mold. Much easier to get X31s out of  the current mold with floor tubes and end fixtures (maybe an etched brass part?). The single door flush roof cars such as N&W would also require a completely new mold.

Bruce

They are long past the early design phase - tooling is almost
complete, samples hoped for by the end of the month (per the Rapido
Live event last Friday).

Someone did ask about the possibility of other roadnames like NP, to
which the response was if the X31A sold well then they would look into
tooling changes.

But it might also be worth mentioning that Rapido have said on these
live events that they are planning a lot more freight cars (from
various eras and regions) with probably another new one in the next
announcement, and then another in the following announcement (subject
to change of course).

So any good ideas/requests should be submitted to Rapido using the
form on their website, or try and get picked in a future Live session.

Bruce,

Is it safe to assume that the original offerings of double door models will not be available with floor tubes and appropriate door markings?

Thank You,

Guy,

That is correct. The Rapido double door cars are class X31A.  These are general service box cars with no automobile loaders and hence no tubes, fixtures or door markings. Note, that they can still be marked "AUTOMOBILES" as is one of the Rapido models. A number of these (X31A DD) cars were used in auto parts service. So, haul the completed product in X31 and X31C cars, haul the parts in X31A and X31B cars.

Bruce

One more time: the notation "AUTOMOBILE" on a car did NOT mean, repeat, did NOT mean it was in auto parts or automobile service. It only meant it was a double-door box car, by AAR definition. Huge numbers of 40-ft. and 50-ft. double-door box cars on many railroads were so labeled and never carried an automobile or carton of auto parts, nor were intended to.

Andy Cich

A very good example of this is the recent Resin Car Works release of a SOO 50’ double door boxcar. These cars were built with the double doors centered to facilitate paper loading. Yet, the word AUTOMOBILE was on the side of the car when built.

Bruce,

Thank you.  I would hope the XAR’s come to fruition down the road.  Definitely looking forward to an upgrade from the Bowser models.
