Help with car ID

Dave Lotz

Hi all,

I need help identifying the type and ownership of the car in this background of this image.  The markings are not clear, but I thought that the logo on the side of the ca might reveal its ownership.  The date of the wreck is June 10, 1909, at Aurora, Illinois.

Thanks for any help that can be provided!

Dave,

The type of car is a ventilated boxcar. Ownership appears to be 4 letters, maybe ending in OGX? (where the X would indicate private ownership)

Regards,
Bruce

The car is one of 300 ventilated boxcars listed by the New Orleans Great Northern Railway (NOGN) in the June 1909 ORER. The listing on page 207 features a triangular emblem similar to that on the freight car.

The X for private owners was not required until beginning in 1913
Very few used it before that date.
