NYC 751000 series 50 foot gondolas

As the new RCW kit for these cars are now being shipped, I was wondering if anyone had additional photos of the cars. The RCW site has three builder's photos of the cars when they were in the 324000 series. There is also one photo of the car (#751478) after the drop doors were removed from the cars during World War II in a refurbishing effort. The cars so modified were place into the 751000 series and these are the cars the kit covers.
I have looked for additional photos of the cars but so far have been unable to find any. I do have the diagram sheet from the NYC site but was unable to find additional photos there. Thanks in advance for looking. Jerry Hamsmith |

Jerry, that image of NYC 751478 is interesting. The car may have had a steel floor installed to replace the wood floor installed previously. The reinforcement angle on the top of the car side may be a clue.
But the car has retained a vertical brake staff through the years. I had thought the AAR mandated geared handbrake wheels for cars rebuilt after 1937.

Those cars in the series with wood floors had a smaller IH than those with a steel floor (4' 4" versus 4' 8") and a smaller cubic capacity. Each ORER noted the existence of the difference in the series and had a footnote listing the specific cars with the wood floors. The October, 1951 ORER (the date of the photo of 751478) does not list that number. So, yes, it would be a steel floor car. My understanding is that all cars got the reinforcement angle, but I am not certain. Jerry Hamsmith |
