Charlie,

One of the C&O's most common marks was RA for Raceland, Kentucky. That was their biggest car shop.

Some Southern locations I spotted in photos are CR, K, MDN, HE, ALX (likely Alexandria, VA), AUG (Augusta, GA?), BN, JAX (surely Jacksonville, Fl), INM, ATL (Atlanta), TUSCA (Tuscaloosa?), LP, CIN. HE seems to most common, followed by JAX. I would also go for AUG and ATL, as they are recognizable and scream "South!".

Yours Aye,

I went though my photos this week and will scan the images I have for Humbert to match the lettering.  Any gaps I’ll ask for help.

I had great response from several of the list members but am needing the top 6-8 scale locations for the following private car owners and railroads:
B&O, BM, C&O, CN, CP, Erie, FGEX, GATX, GTW, GN, L&N, MILW, NKP, NP, NYNH&H,N&W,  PM, PRR, Soo, Seaboard, SOUTHERN.

Charlie,

After extensive review (over lunch, looking at some photos), the PRR's top scale codes are:

Hands down winners, as in the VAST majority of cars show these three (Which makes sense, given the location of PRR car shops):

P50 PRR Enola PA
P57 PRR East Altoona WH PA Altoona
P62 PRR Hollidaysburg, EB PA

Well represented, but not as much as the above (and also allowing the inclusion of some Lines West scales):

P205 PRR Hump, Metal Yard PA Pitcairn
P330 PRR West Side PA New Castle
P441 PRR Car Shop IN Ft. Wayne
P712 PRR Terre Haute IN New Shop

Note that in providing these 7, you provide all of the digits needed to bash your own code from 1 to 776.. If you were to slip in a couple of 8's and 9's, you could basically bash any PRR scale code.

Hi Charlie,

My take on the 7 most important NP shop and weigh stations are
BD - Brainerd, MN
CO = Como Shops, MN
LR = Laurel, MT
PA = Pasco, WA
PW = Parkwater, WA
SE =  Staples, MN
ST = South Tacoma

I'm sure others may chime in and correct or add others.

I’ve been kicking around an idea with Hubert Mask on having a decal set made with the most common weight locations by railroad.  I have a comprehensive list of Mopac locations but would need help with the other railroads.   I told Hubert I’d be happy to compile a list if the group members would send me the top six or eight locations.  Obviously I don’t want the full name but the ‘short name’ the railroad used in there stencil.  As example for the MP Kingsville was KV, Alexandria was ALEX. The decal sheet would be alphabetized by railroad so if you are wanting to restenciled a ATSF boxcar it would be easy to find.   He’ll also include a set of light weights.

So the .io list isn’t filled with responses to this topic you can send your railroad name and weigh locations to me (omahaduck (at) gmail (dot) com)

thanks for helping.

The Union Pacific needs white, black, red and yellow reweigh shop stencils, lube stencils, freight car classes, built dates,
and actual load limit and light weight stencils both pre-1963 and post-1963!! (Gross Rail Load values increased for all
freight cars in 1963 and every car had to be reweighed and restenciled)

I'm just sayin' :-)

But I'd be very interested in the above. And there are other roads that need multiple colors too. And you could figure out
how to compile all that on a sheet for one major railroad (or set of roads) then use that layout as a 'template' for other roads.

In my opinion you can cover a lot of territory with "roman" and "gothic" type because the sizes are so small - 1" 2" 3" so
fine distinctions are a lot harder to see and don't matter unless you're building a museum piece. But there are exceptions
I'm sure like NYC and PC modern styles etc.

Ed is very correct.  I will have to look at each railroads font.   Will have to hold it to certain amount of roads.

Ed Hawkins reminded me that the railroad’s stencils were different so I’ve added a column so the font will be different based on photos.   As I mentioned,  I’m only selecting the most common weigh stations by railroad and plan to have only 6-8 stations for the larger roads.  My cut off year is 1960 and start year is 1935.   I did find the reweigh list in the files folder and have it as a starting point.   Also adding tare weights to the list based on photo sources.

 Yeah, one of the drawbacks of the Champ sheets is that the style of the letters and numbers does not match some of the newer, finer, decal efforts. But it is way better than nothing. I have thought about custom printing reweigh dates just for my era of modeling.

Check the group Files section for the Reweigh Symbol spreadsheet.  It's crowdsourced and could probably use a bit of QA, but it's been there for years.
