Rio Grande Oil Company HO decals special run

Hello- I found the cover photo on Ted Cullota's "Focus on the Freight car, vol 10", of a 1936 photo of a West Coast gasoline company tank car very sentimental. My interest in this company relates to how my Grandfather worked in the large Goleta, CA oil field adjacent to the Rio Grande Oil Company's site. My Grandmother told me from an early age about how this area was the sole area shelled from a WWll adversary; the Japanese sub shelling the Ellwood Beach pier of Pacific Western and Rio Grande oil companies. My Grandfather was the Pacific Western Oil Field engineer and was actively working at the attacked area during that period of the war. He was at home at the time of the attack. 10 years ago, my interest in vintage gasoline pumps encouraged me to approach Jerry Glow to make a 12" to the foot scale gas pump plate (decal) for my 1941 Bennett gas pump. Jerry's art and decal are worthy of great accolades, they were done so well. When the Cullota freight car book arrived, I wanted a model of the cover subject. When a GATC type 17 10K gallon assembled/non-lettered Tangent Models HO car became available a couple months ago, I purchased one (I now wish I got more). I had good luck with a new decal maker for my project resin Western Pacific 1916 Pullman built 15001-16000 series of 40 SS box cars. He was excited to go for the colorful RIO Grande car and I now have a few sets which I am offering to anyone reading this message. Thanks to Dave Parker, I received a list of RGO Co numbers for GATC type 17 10K tank cars. Anyone wanting to purchase a decal set for this tank car I can offer the following: R.G.O.X. # 201 RGOX # 216 RGOX # 223 RGOX # 238 RGOX # 242 Proof art for the tank car decals  Each set has a single number which is unique to me in the decal business. Andy, Really cool project. And as I model the Bay Area, I thought it would be appropriate to add a RGOX car to my fleet. Checking the 36 and 55 tank car tariffs RGOX is in the 36, but not the 55. When I looked at my Jan 43 and Oct 44 ORERs, RGOX is AWOL also. Do you know when the Rio Grande tank car fleet was sold and to whom? In my 7/35 ORER, Rio Grande (RGOX) was still a stand-alone, and also in the 1936 tariff..
Ian Cranstone's on-line tabulation shows the RGOX reporting marks in use by Richfield from 7/37 to 4/38 (my 1/38 ORER agrees). No sign of the RGOX marks in my 1/40 ORER or thereafter. Hope this helps, but I suspect it's more likely to cause disappointment. -- Dave Parker Swall Meadows, CA |

Disappointment, yes and no. Yes about not lettering a car in Andy's colorful livery. No in that I have insight into tank car traffic for my layout. Richfield Oil had a tank farm served by the Santa Fe at the end of a spur from Richmond's Ferry Point. They did not have a Bay Area refinery to the best of my knowledge. It seems likelier than not that they would have shipped product into the Bay area via the SP coast line and interchanged to the Santa Fe for delivery making it unlikely that I'd have ROX tanks in my thru freights from Stockton but plausible to come out of Oakland on the local. Now if I can figure out which of the ROX 10K cars came from the RGOX prototypes for the Tangent cars. I've concluded that the two compartment RGOX 101 & 102 became ROX 792 & 798. This brings to mind Tony Thompson's trick enabling him to run a tank car decorated for the Mutual Oil Company long after Mutual had been absorbed by Conoco. He heavily weathered the car and changed the reporting marks, but not the number, to CONX. Quite clever, in my estimation. Richard Townsend

John, given how recently (for your modeling) the Rio Grande sale to Richfield occurred, you could certainly "patch" a Rio Grande Oil paint scheme for ROX reporting marks and number.
