Photo: Loading Oranges

This is a photo of (supposedly) orange crates being loaded into a PFE reefer. What caught my eye were the words “Lay Flat” on the crates. I’ve never seen this on the many orange crate photos I’ve reviewed.

Normally, orange crates are stacked on their ends when placed in a reefer to promote air circulation. Laying them flat tends to damage the oranges. On the other hand, the date of this photo is February 1942, several months into World War II. Prior to the war, 462 packing crates made up a standard reefer load of oranges. During World War II, the Office of Defense Transportation ordered that cars were to be loaded with 693 crates.  This attempt at better car utilization resulted in a lot of damaged fruit. Due to the high amount of damage to loads, the order was revised to reduce the number of crates to 561. The order was completely rescinded in 1947 and the 462 standard re-emerged.

Perhaps the “Lay Flat” instructions were to remind those loading the car that things had changed.

Any thoughts on this?

I also noticed the ends of the orange crates are not solid boards like I remember in the 50's.  My dad was a grocery store produce manager and I had all the orange crates I ever wanted.  Sadly, they are all gone.

Where do you see “sheet foil?”

"I also noticed the ends of the orange crates are not solid boards..."
Yes, these are the first crates I've seen without solid ends, but all the many examples I've seen are from California's citrus industry. The wire binding is a bit unusual but not entirely.
Perhaps the location is Florida or Texas.

I’d love to get a PFE 50 footer if F&C could be convinced. Missed my chance with Sunshine’s car years ago!

Stephen,

I believe you'd have better luck with a Westerfield PFE R70-1 or a PSC brass one... They do show up from time to time on Brasstrains.com and eBay.

Matthew is right.

The Westerfield R-50-x model is dimensionally correct. The Sunshine model is not.

Hello Tim,

I have more than 20 Sunshine PFE reefer kits of most of their different car types, and I always thought they have been very well researched and are accurate. Which of their PFE kits is not correct, and to what degree? Possible to correct it?
(And do you have a date of that nice color photo?)

Many thanks and greetings
