Upgraded Accurail 36’ Fowler Boxcar

Looking over the research by Ray Breyer  done on the various Fowler boxcars and the clones I decided the Erie boxcar was closest to the Accurail kit.  I ordered an Erie decorated one but I wasn’t pleased with the size of the dimensional lettering (it looked too large) so I ordered an Erie decal set off the Westerfield site as a replacement.  I also sanded down the DS roof and made a new one from Evergreen .010 styrene and 2” x 4” Evergreen strips.

All the cast on grab irons were carved off and replaced with Westerfield 18” straight grab irons.  Tru-Color MKT brown was used for the carbody.

The Erie car is very close to the prototype; the diagonal ‘Z’ braces in the sides have the channels facing up. The only issue is the ends have an extra vertical ‘Z’ brace which I decided to just live with.  The Westerfield decals, while including the later 1930-1950’s small dimensional data, load limits, etc unfortunately leave off a reweigh location and dates.
