Shipping Potatoes

For the time period of this group, would the primary potato varieties have been shipped long distances (let’s say 2,000 miles-plus) or would they have been typically  limited to regional transport?

Thanks.

I had talked on (parts of) this in years past in a presentation that started by me asking myself if I had too many reefers.
In researching I found some AAR documents covering almost two years of 1956/1957. Later than my 53 modeling date however it formed the substructure of the presentation.

Crops ripen at different times from southwest to the northeast US, Florida being an exception.
Of potatoes specifically look back to post 154950.
I know at other times we have talked of spuds here and it is era sensitive to some degree as Maine spuds in the 40s were later replaced by Idaho spuds (thanks to McD's) by the end of this lists time.  Also late season spuds store better than early spuds, and that affects shipment numbers overall.

Car volumes of spuds and where the loads originated can be found in the 154950 post.

Of my presentation, the busiest time for reefers is in winter in protected service keeping things from freezing. Those reefers do not magically disappear in summer, rather they protect commodities from excessive heat and in the files are found Perishable Commodities they hauled other than fruit and veggies.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                Jim Dick - Roseville, MN
I'll upload one of the sets of AAR reports  and in the reefer section is found potatoes.
Note the Canadian car mention on the first page.
The entire set  of the AAR documents is about 13MG. If Mike or Jeff can figure a place to put this, I'll offer it up.

Potatoes most definitely can travel more than 2,000 miles! They come in many varieties, and come into
season at different times of the year. There was a great TRAINS magazine article in the 1950's on the
Santa Fe's movement of solid trains of San Joaquin valley potatoes to Chicago on a 120 hour schedule,
which was evidently "high speed" for that commodity in those days.

Idaho potatoes are large and are treated with sulfuric acid in the soil to produce thick skins. The central
valley potatoes are smaller and thin skinned - great for frying! Maine potatoes are mostly small and brown
skinned, and they are shipped from late fall through the winter. I don't think I've had Red River potatoes
but those must have generated a lot of NP & GN & MILW traffic.

I recall reading articles with photos about the potato rush from San Joaquin valley.  As I recall, it was Santa Fe hauling refrigerator cars over Tehachapi.

1.  Message 154950 can be retrieved by using the groups.io Messages page, and searching for the message number.  It appears near the bottom of the page of the search results.

2.  I can't see how there can be an answer to Bob's question "for the time period of this group" -- which is 1900 to 1960.  A more productive discussion might be had by reposing the question for, e.g., the 1950s.

That sounds like it... I read it in the 1960's when I was reading through my Dad's train magazine collection.

Hi Bob,

I lived on Long Island (NY) in the ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘60s.  When we lived in the Bellerose section of Queens, wen could look out our back windows onto a farm that grew, among other things, potatoes!  Potatoes were a big crop on Long Island and, of course, we deemed them the best, but I recall that the local A&P offered Maine and Idaho potatoes as well, so I’d say potatoes definitely traveled significant distances.

Clark, is it possible to RE-ORDER the list by DATE ? That might reveal something about seasonal traffic.

I tried pasting the data into Excel, but it all comes in on the same column. Apparently Clark used the space bar instead of the tab key, so the only way to sort the data by date is to retype it in Word with tabs or retype it in Excel.

When that doesn't work, paste the entire list into a text editor, and save it as plain text in a .csv file; open the .csv file in whatever spreadsheet program you use (I use Libre Office on Mac OS X 10.13) and perpetrate the few edits which almost any manually-produced text listing like this needs. It took me about ten minutes to generate

which could use another edit or two.

Copy into Word. Replace all multiple spaces with single spaces. Replace spaces with commas or tab. Paste Special into Excel. I used Libre office which is a little harder, but still fairly quick. Edit a little where things are in the wrong columns.

Clark, is it possible to RE-ORDER the list by DATE ? That might reveal something about seasonal traffic.

After Steve Sandifer posted the link to the interesting YouTube video, I recalled that some of the AAR documents referenced areas in California of shipments from areas.

I'll attach some of these documents that reference shipping dates and volumes  from differing locations across the US including Calif.   These reports came out bi-monthly.
In keeping with the thread these are all the page of the report dealing with Refrigeration.

Of some notations to read: The first sentence of the May 21, 1956;  as with the first sentence of July 19, 57;   Feb, 27, 1957 first paragraph,  aw heck, read it as it is all good.
And then for those interested in Bananas, (Have we talked about that here before?), you can also find some data on the attached.

Looking over these as they are to be uploaded, no they did not attach chronologically.  I tried, however the data is still there.
Now that we have hit potatoes, isn't it time for bananas to be discussed again?                             Jim Dick - St. Paul, MN

If ya want something done... :-D

OBSERVE -- no potatoes shipped in April, May, or June.

And mostly shipped from December to March, with some later
summer and fall shipments.

Nelson,

No typing required!.  Copied to Word, then search & replace the spaces with tabs, copied into Excel.

I tried pasting the data into Excel, but it all comes in on the same column. Apparently Clark used the space bar instead of the tab key, so the only way to sort the data by date is to retype it in Word with tabs or retype it in Excel.

Clark, is it possible to RE-ORDER the list by DATE ? That might reveal something about seasonal traffic.
