I found this photo of a GM&O car tag.

It simply reads “S P L F D”. Almost like a line on an eye chart.

Does anyone know what “S P L F D” means?

I would guess that this is not a one purpose tag.  My thought would be that upon use, 
one letter would be circled or marked. Perhaps a specific yard or routing, an interchange
 point or some such.

I agree with Chuck.
The Wabash had multi use tags; but they weren't as vague.  Specific uses were spelled out.
