USATC boxcars at Mt Union, PA

Jim Eager

Does anyone know if the original source and builder has been confirmed for the 15-16 US Army Transportation Corps 36ft single-sheathed boxcars that sat for years in the EBT yard at Mt Union PA? (Since scrapped and removed.) Several sources I found say they were ex-BAR as the outline of the BAR lettering could be seen under the peeling olive drab paint.

Here is USA 22122 at Burnham PA:

I was in a couple of them years ago and they had BAR and the number stenciled on the inside, too. Not that I bothered to note the numbers. I MIGHT have builder info at work... Monday.

Thanks Dennis, I'll check back next week.

I have also heard these were ex-BAR box cars. They certainly appear to fit the bill. :-)

I have a grab iron that "fell" off of one of them, some 30+ years ago.😉

Unfortunately I was wrong, I do not have builder information. All I have is BAR 9000 - 10999, 549 cars in 1930, 188 in 1957, all gone by 1959. I suspect the USATC cars in Mt. Union were part of the reduction, sold off during WWII. These USATC cars were purchased by Kovalchick Salvage, and stored in the East Broad Top (also owned by Kovalchick) Standard gauge yard in Mt. Union, PA. A couple of years ago I read a report that there were more of these cars at another Kovalchick yard someplace else in Pennsylvania, but I can't find the reference.

I do have more photos, supplied to me by Ray Breyer:

Cool beans, that 36 foot State of Maine car! In 1957 the entire series 10000 to 10399 was filled
with new 50 foot State of Maine box cars, so we know the 10045 didn't last much past 1956. :-)

Dennis - How about running some of these in the original BAR and the USATC markings as at Mt. Union?
