Help with truck identification

O Fenton Wells

Gentlemen, Trucks are one of my weakest areas of knowledge.  Any idea what these trucks are?  And what is the closest model for them HO scale.
Thanks
Fenton

They look like some version of Barber integral journal U-section sideframes

They’re a variant of Andrews trucks, I don’t know is there is an exact match, but I would use Tahoe Model Works Andrews trucks.

Here is better view of the truck from the same source

I don’t think that the journal boxes are separable, so it is more likely an example of an ARA “standard” double truss spring plank truck.

This is a page from Richard Hendrickson’s MRH 2013 truck document

Having said that, the shallow arch of the top cord of the truck makes it somewhat unusual.  I am not sure that I see a good matching HO truck.

Other comments are welcome.

Thanks for the clear photo, Steve. The railhead on the other side of the car runs across the bottom of the front side frame in the original photo, making me think it was an Andrews truck.

I agree Steve - at first I thought it might be a Vulcan but it definitely does not have the pedestal journal
which would also disqualify it from being an Andrews either.

Hi Fenton--There are a variety of cast steel U-section trucks available. Because of the spring plank and the open ended bolster, I would use Tahoe Model Works 106 or 206, depending on your choice of wheel width. I use these on my FGEX cars.

I think you are misinterpreting the edges of the brake shoes, Nelson. These aren’t Andrews.

Yes, after Steve posted the photos, I went back and looked at the original photo and realized the error. The rail on the other side of the car fooled me. It ran across the bottom of the side frame, making me think they were Andrews trucks.

Could they be a variation of a Crown truck?  I've attached a photo of a Bowser Crown truck for comparison; I know they would not have the "bars" from the frame to the journal boxes.

They are a PRR design 2D-F8. The car these are under, reused a former PRR R7 reefer.

The trucks you are looking for are what Red Caboose put with the X29 kits

Crown trucks are another type of pedestal truck - the journal box is not part of the sideframe.

No.  While the underframe is repurposed from a Class R7 reefer, the trucks in question lack the characteristic droop sideframe of the 2D-F8 / ARA Type Y truck.
