CB&Q Hoppers from Athearn Two-Bay Ribbed Hopper

golden1014

Gentlemen,

I just received a box full of new Athearn 2-bay, ribbed side hoppers from an estate.  I was told by Jerry Hamsmith they are a good starting point for CB&Q twins.

Does anyone here have photos of the CB&Q ribbed twins handy?  I have the CB&Q Society magazine that covers the cars, but I'm in need of some end shots.  Also, and more importantly, I don't know how I'm going to handle modeling the horizontal seam on the sides of the car.  Some better photos would help.

Thanks in Advance,

John,
The two side sheets are in the same plane with a crimped lap on the inside. So a slight groove with a line of Archer rivets below should represent the seam nicely. Simple in principle,  a bit finicky to do cleanly. Ideally, you'd want a shallow groove with the lower edge sharp and the upper edge rounded into the face of the side sheet.  You should be able to zoom in on this linked photo  to see what I mean. I'm rather surprised how close the rivets are to the edge of the lower sheet.

FWIW, I was making one of these cars in O scale from a Weaver hopper with the sides and ends cut away and replaced with .020 styrene, with the sides grooved as described. Also build new end framing from styrene strip. Hadn't gotten much farther than that when it was packed up with other works-in-progress due to a move, and hasn't been unpacked since. Someday...
Sounds like a good project with the Athearn hopper as a base. Best wishes!

Hi John and List Members,

I have an interest in these cars myself.

One unanswered question for me is that the series CB&Q 190000-190999 twin hoppers (ACF Lot 232) appears to have been built in 1926. What color would they have been painted when new? Freight car red? Black? Something else? I have a builders photo image, but I can't tell what color it may have been...

Thanks in advance for any input on this topic

The Q hoppers had an inside length (IL) of 34'-3". Stantard hoppers have an IL of 33'-0". Would folks purchase a resin kit of this hopper to get a correct model? I have a general arrangement drawing. They do look longer.

Yes, I would buy more than one.

Considering all other CB&Q cars built during this period were Mineral Red (some say Boxcar Red), I've always assumed that is their original paint and any repaints until 1958. Chinese Red painted cars started in 1958 and any series of black painted hoppers were after the ending time of this list.

Here is the one of the Burlington Route Historical Society model pages. You can evaluate the paint yourself. The composite gondolas would be contemporaries of the first steel hoppers:

Tom, and Everyone,

Thank You for the photos!  I must've got a hundred photos from all directions.  They're very helpful and I have enough to do the project.  The photo you linked to is the best one I received.  You guys are very generous.

I understand the "groove" between the sheets.  I wanted detailed photos to confirm what that groove looked like exactly.  Someone sent a photo of a car from a low angle and the groove can barely be seen, which confirms that it didn't have a uniform shape as you explained.  I think what I will do is make a template and scribe the line, then make a shaped tool out of an old screwdriver to get the groove right.

I'll chronicle all this stuff on the blog.  It'll be months before they're done, but I will get started this weekend.  Fenton's got me going on another project too--a B&O M-58 50-foot auto car.  He's doing one too.

Buy some Burlington hoppers?  Yes, definitely...but NOT after I spend 40 hours rebuilding a couple of old BB dogs.

I haven't studied the rosters yet but Burlington had around 4,000 of these cars.  That counts it as an essential car in my book.

Hi Bill and List Members,

Thanks for the info. I model in N scale, and Micro-Trains makes an N scale twin hopper that is a close match to the Athearn HO twin hopper. So there is a nice possibility of me doing this exact same work in N scale. I had previously made a note to myself regarding this as a possible kitbash, but the lack of basic info on these cars has kept me from trying it so far

I’d certainly like a pair. Will they be made with cast on grabs or will the modeler have to install wire grabs. I’m for the latter.
