SFRD Questions

Nelson Moyer

I just read Volume 2 of the Santa Fe Railway Rolling Stock Reference Series on reefers, USRA rebuilds to be specific, in preparation for building four RCW kits. The text states that Rr-35 and Rr-36 classes got Royal Type F slack adjusters, but the text is silent on the remaining classed from Rr-39/40/45. Did these last three classed got slack adjusters or not? Kit instructions are generic for all classes. They simply say install the slack adjuster.

The second question is about slogan assignments for Rr-45 cars. The table in Appendix B stops at Rr-44. The only photo of a Rr-45 class car is 9516 with El Capitan. Slogan number assignments or photos of Rr-45 cars showing the slogan would be helpful in selecting a road number.

If you have a proto photo, there would be stenciling along the lower side to indicate the presence of a slack adjuster.

The only photo of a Rr-45 I have is the one the Vol. 2 of the reefer book, and small lettering isn’t readable.

Keith Jordan replied:

“SFRD classes Rr-35, -36, -39, -40, -43, -45, -46 and -48, all had Royal type “F” brake adjusters, according to the car folio.

For slogans, according to the SFRHMS P&L guide update, published in March 1991, Rr-45 9516 had El Capitan in 1948, 9627 had Chief (date unknown), 9679 had Super Chief in 1972, 9766 had Grand Canyon in 1971. What slogan or slogans were assigned to the class is unknown.”

Thanks, Bob. The only remaining unanswered question is about the slogan assignments on Rr-45 cars. The only photo I have is 9516 with El Capitan. If I use that road number, I’d have to splice four single digit numbers, which I would prefer not to do if possible. I’ve done it before, and the end numbers are hard to line up individually. I’m still holding out for the information or photos or other Rr-45 cars showing the slogan.

Here is my list of RR-45 SFRD slogans

RR-45 road numbers 9370-9869  500 cars

9516  El Capitan
9627  Chief
9679  Super Chief
9766  Grand Canyon
9638  Grand Canyon

Repaints may have the original slogan replaced with what slogan stencil was available in the paint shop.  All slogan stencils were not available at all paint shops from time to time.  New stencils for the Texas Chief (ca 1948), San Francisco Chief (ca 1957) slogans were also used to  replace previous slogans.

Does anyone have any photograph showing a Texas Chief slogan prior to 1954?

I have a photo of 9241 with the new Chief slogan. I didn’t record the source. I think it’s the Santa Fe reefer book. The reweigh date is WC 47.

But only through 1944. That leaves out Rr-45 onward.

Yes, that says the Texas Chief slogan was added in 1948. But I have not seen any photograph or mention of any specific car with this slogan prior to 1954.

This car was painted Texas Chief and it appears to be original paint - Can anyone identify the class?

Rr-48 and 55 were the only fishbelly underframe cars with 6 foot plug doors when the class was created. But many/most of the earlier rebuilds had them added from 1953 on. The Rr-48 class originally had the old open towards the ends hatches, but I believe they were changed. So it is likely the original paint from when an earlier rebuild was shopped to have the plug door added.

Your photo is of a modernized refrigerator car from the one of the following classes  RR-23, 25, 27, 28 or 32.
The common features of these classes are the 3 inch top lip on the sides, the inset corner of the reverse dreadnought ends, electric fans and the modernized underframe end sills, 13 foot long  7 inch channel under the 6 foot sliding door.  The hatches are turned to open to the end of the car and the bill board and routing boards relocated.

The photos I have of a modernized RR-23 with the Texas Chief duplicates all the features of your photo so I would suggest your photo is of an RR-23 modernized in that 1954-59 period - your photo probably dates from the mid to late 1960s.
