Looking over the few photos I've found of FDDM&S box cars from the transition era, has left me a few questions as to the paint scheme. Looks like underframe including trucks were black. Ends are the same color as the sides. But the roof? I'm guessing the same color as the sides, but could also be black as dirty as I've seen it.

Could be different between wood side and steel box cars. Not really enough photos to be certain.

Friend of mine who's got a lot of interest in the FDDM&S is uncertain, but thinks roof and ends were painted same color as sides, with black underframe (perhaps some form of tar or asphalt to protect against rust) and trucks.

If anyone knows better, I'd appreciate the correction!

I've searched the messages here, but while it's turned up a photo showing a very dirty black-ish roof, but if this has been covered before, I apologize for the redundant question.

Looking forward to seeing many of you at Cocoa Beach!

Happy New Year Arved & Group!!!

The Ft. Dodge Line was the first of three Salzberg roads to receive the refurbished B&M XM-1 SS cars of 1929/30. The painting practice on those cars, done in the B&M's Concord (DS) Shop, was roof same as sides and ends, freight car red.  I do not know what the practice underneath was but likely same color.  I cannot say how the other FtDDM&S cars were done.

Maybe some cars esp the Fowler cars got black car cement but a majority of photos show body color roofs
or unpainted (weathered?) roofs. Dunno about the underframes. In general they should be "filth" color. :-)

Attached are some Jim Sand’s photos from my collection. The few color photos I have of FDDM&S boxcars appear to have black roofs, or more likely roof cement, and underframes/trucks. Ends look to be body color, so some look like they could be covered with car cement.

What's the origin of the car in the last photo, coupled to the WAG car?  I recognize the car in the first photo as ex-RI, possibly ex-CNW, and the second as ex-RI.

Hello Ron & Group!

The Ft. Dodge car next to WAG 5240 are both former B&M XM-1 boxcars from 1929/1930 (SSC).  The FtDDM&S actually started getting their 100 or so cars about a year and a half before the WAG began their acquisitions beginning in early 1958.  Of course, the WAG raised this to a 'fine art' ultimately receiving more than 500 of all three types of those 2000 cars.

But perhaps you were asking after the all-steel car to the left?  Cannot say much about that one.

Thanks everyone. I'll try my hand at black car cement for the roof. i.e. a thick flat black paint mopped with a cheap paint brush. :P
