Rebuilt boxcar, Youngstown replacement 10-panel sides

I'd be interested in finding an HO version of the common rebuilt boxcar with 10 panel sides. I know the Tichy plastic kit has 8-panel sides, and it's lower. I'm trying to think of a source for these, 10' or preferably 10'-6" inside height. I think the Westerfield T&P 81000 kit might have these, but the one I built is put away right now so I can't check it out. There were also numerous Sunshine kits configured like this, but I'll probably build all of my remaining ones as the model they were intended to be.
To clarify, I'm thinking of a basic kit that I could modify with new ends etc. I can supply my own hardware like trucks, grabs etc. Sort of like the Yarmouth kits for new-built steel cars with modeler-supplied ends and other stuff.. Any other suggestions? Ron Merrick Ron Merrick |

Ron, depending on what IH you want I would start with an IM, Branchline, Red Caboose or IMWX car and buy the underframe parts from Chad Boas. That way you get the 10 panel sides and the USRA rebuilt look. We did several of these in the Shake 'N Take at Cocoa Beach RPM thanks to Greg Martin, you might check out the S 'N T web site and I believe there are instructions on these cars for you to use. By the way, I don't know what prototype you are trying to build a model of but the Atlas USRA rebuilds are 10 panel cars, you may get closer with one of those. The atlas model is a definition of Foobie. It models no prototype out of the box. It’s been discussed several times on the list.

Every Atlas Rebuilt I've ever seen is an 8 Panel car. Yes, it is a poor model, but for some of us modeling in scales other than HO it is the only starting point. Don Burn -----Original Message-----

I had thought about the Atlas car, but the other day I couldn't find it on the website and today I still can't. I figured it would be a Trainman series but I don't see it there or under the Master line. I hadn't realized that the Chad Boas line had a 'rebuilt boxcar'. That's probably exactly what I need. And I'm familiar with the prototype since I did a couple of the original Sunshine version. By the way, one of these cars still exists in Salina, Kansas. I'm about to do some of the Sunshine conversions for various ATSF cars, since I picked up a couple of the underframe minikits. The original Sunshine concept included a C&BT boxcar body, but I'll probably use an IM or Branchline body, depending on prototype, instead. The reason I threw this question out is that there occasionally are prototypes that I run across and think that someday I could build that. One that I've been thinking about is a Santa Fe Bx-11, 12 or 13 full steel body rebuild. Ron Merrick |

Yep, last summer it was still in the same place. It's roughly halfway between the MP Salina depot and the UP Union depot, which are all of four or five blocks apart.
The number appears to be 134043, although the last couple of digits are a bit uncertain. Ron Merrick

It just occured to me that the grab irons are intact, there is no fencing, and is what lawyers love to call an "attractive nuisance". Because if a kid climbs up there and falls, someone is going to sued. :-( It's actually nice to see something NOT hyper-protected and therefore spoiled.
