Westerfield PRR X23 etched metal ladders...
Rob Schoenberg
Hi all,
Has anyone tried Westerfield's etched metal ladders for the X23? Are they worth the cost of upgrading? Do they look more prototypical or is it just an ease of assembly upgrade? Thanks, Rob Schoenberg |

Rob,
I am biased because I helped create these 😉 but I would give you an emphatic YES! Have you built the resin ladders in the kit? Um, they are not fun and are delicate. While the individual parts of the etched ladders can be delicate, by the time you have them assembled, they are pretty robust, and on the car, can stand more handling than the resin ones. They look amazing, with the correct standoffs for the X23.
I wrote the instructions on how to use them, and assembling these types of ladders has gotten pretty routine for me. I am using etched ladders whenever I can to replace other types.

I seem to recall at the time that Tom Madden was trying
to cast those X23 ladders to scale
in resin - I think I remember him showing me a set and they were gorgeous to look at. Ah, Naperville... such fond memories from those two decades, before and after the millenium... :-) Tim O'Connor On 2/16/2022 3:56 PM, Bruce Smith wrote:

Slightly off subject, but not much....
Does anyone know if Taurus Products, which made etched (?) brass caboose ladders, is still in business? I installed a pair of those ladders in place of the caboose kit-supplied ladders. They add much realism to the car since they appear to be true to design and scale. I bought the pair I have decades ago. Only place I've seen them currently is on eBay. -Chuck |

Charles,
Taurus Products was taken over by Trout Creek Engineering. Website is hard to find and their former website is defunct, but here it is:
Scroll down the page to the parts section. Look for part no. P2002 (5 rung ladder) or P2012 (4 rung ladder).
I don't know if either is the same as the Taurus Products ladder.

Note: There is a professional engineering firm that also uses the name Trout Creek Engineering, so caution in seeking the model railroad manufacturer is suggested.

Yes, the Trout Creek ladders are the old Taurus ladders. They also make an O scale version, although I can't find it on the new web page. If you have questions, you should be able to reach them by email at troutcreekeng@... . I bought some from of the O scale ladders from Clifford Mestel at Trout Creek just a few months ago. and the cost was $12 plus $1 shipping.
