Two parts to this comment/response:
I'm curious about the economics/costs of this shipment. The Kent, Ohio > Tacoma Washington distance is 2880 miles. The bus would get 5 mpg... The cost of a gallon of gas in 1938 was .20... The cost of driving the bus from Kent to Tacoma would have been... $97.60 + driver + expenses... (relative cost 2011... $2.11 per gallon... 2880 miles...$214.70+driver+expenses...) How much would it cost to ship via automobile box car? I've been curious about these photos as they have appeared over the last two years... I don't think that there have been any models that have the working end doors? Has anyone here "modified" an existing model to have the open doors? If so, any photos? Description? While it seems like a pretty straight forward project, I'm wondering about any pitfalls befor I start cutting and dicing?! Ray Hutchison |

Ray,
Part 1, less by boxcar. You forget in your calculations that there was no interstate highway system in 1938, so the trip would take longer and how would you return the driver home? Train most likely. The driver expenses would very quickly add up.
Part 2 - Yes, I know of some who have done that. Gary Mittner, a PRR modeler recently posted a vignette with and end door car delivering a fire engine.

I’d really like to find an end view of those 98100-98199 cars.

Is there anyone making operating end doors for boxcars or at least some that could be attached in the open position that could be retrofitted to the P2K end door boxcars or other similar boxcars?

Since open doors need to be thin and have detail on both sides... I think 3-D print may be the best solution On 3/8/2022 2:10 PM, Allen Cain wrote:

I'd forgotten that! But I actually used some adhesive on my model on both the side doors and end doors, since they would flap open or slide together sideways. How do they rate for prototype accuracy? I've heard rumours that Lionels giraffe car was a fooby. On Wed, 9 Mar 2022, 03:47 John Mateyko, <rattler21@...> wrote: Both Lionel and MTH offered double door 50' boxcars with operating doors at one end. John Mateyko |

While the brands Lionel and MTH don’t evoke feelings of accurate product excellence over the past maybe two decades they have been a boon to 1/48 two rail modelers with state of the art scale locomotives, freight and passenger cars.

Maybe not proto 48 level, but really nice for production models. Charlie Vlk And, by the way, I have a photo of a giraffe being delivered to the Brookfield Zoo (Illinois) in a boxcar. No hole in the roof (it wasn’t that tall) but a “giraffe car” it was, at least while it was in transit! On Mar 9, 2022, at 10:12 AM, Philip Dove <philipdove22@...> wrote:
