L&N Tool and Water Car
Bob Chapman
With the layout here suffering a severe case of "boxcaritis," I've been trying to shift my modeling to some other car types. The L&N tool and water car project moves me halfway, involving but half a DS boxcar.
These cars were very common in L&N B&B consists circa 1950, providing potable water for washing, cooking, and drinking. Built on an as-needed basis over several decades by various company carshops, they were repurposed from whatever happened to be available, with no standard design. Some were created from boxcars, with half the carbody serving as a tool shed and the other half cut away to provide floorspace for a wooden cistern. Others were flatcars or wood-sided gondolas, the deck providing room for one or sometimes twin cisterns. It seemed that no two were alike. With the retirement of steam, many were replaced with more durable surplus steam tenders.
The model is scratchbuilt, based on plans (amazingly) in the 6/86 RMC.
A question -- did other roads have water cars with similar vertical wooden cisterns, or was this just an L&N thing?
Regards,
Bob Chapman

Great Build!! Been wanting to do the same. In my stack future to do's.
Is it all scratch built? Do you use kit flat or boxcar frame? Evergreen plastic for top section? Per B/W photos in article, appears to be dark red. Did the L&N have a std. maintenance red? Sorry for all the questions, but this build may move up on the to do list. |

Yes

No -- just styrene sheet and strips
Evergreen plastic for top section?
The roof -- yes. Stripwood used for the cistern, flatcar deck, and runningboard.

Yes, L&N painted their MofW cars freight car red, likely the same paint as their boxcars, hoppers, etc. What's different about the MofW cars is that (at least circa 1950), they were almost universally faded to a pinkish red, no doubt the result of being removed from the regular repaint cycle along with standing long hours in the southern sun.
fwiw -- I'll probably do an article on the project for the L&NHS Magazine when they have a slow news day, if you're not in a hurry.

Thanks,. Know your a L&N fan. Just forwarded your article to a fellow L&N proto and modeler. Don't worry can always, like many, find another of many projects.
Thanks!!!!!! Reuben @ Poplarville, MS along the SR mainline. |

Bob,
Can you tell how you made the horizontal sliding window? What size styrene framing is used for the sliding track? Are you going to install window screen on the outside as well?
Thanks in advance,
Jason P

Yes, “boxcaritis”, I’ve been having the same symptoms. This looks like a good remedy. I’ll have to look deeper into SP’s MOW fleet. I know Jason Hill has done a lot of work in this area.

As a follow up to Bob's remarks on L&N boxcar red, it varied. L&N would ask paint suppliers to bid on paint. There was a sample provided, I was told. L&N was a frugal railroad. A better price meant more than the paint being slightly more or less red. Not to mention that in the early 20th century some things were somewhat less standardized than today. Oxides of iron and red lead were primary pigments and proportions could vary from supplier A to supplier B. Some weathered at different rates. In short, just take it that all L&N red freight cars were NOT the same color. Not nearly. Chuck Peck |

With the L&N, one cannot go wrong having too many hopper cars. Chuck Peck On Sun, Mar 13, 2022 at 12:10 PM Eric Hansmann <eric@...> wrote:

Window castings are Tichy #8068. The rectangular window frames are .020” x .020” strip 2’11” high and 4’3” long, surrounded by .010” x .040” trim. No plans for window screens, since this particular prototype didn't have them. But many of the other L&N T&W cars did, and it's a cool feature (see attached tool car photo).
