New resin freight car kits

Eric Hansmann

Resin Car Works has released their first kits of 2022. These are featured in the latest RCW blog post.

With this new release of the MDT-built 30'6 offset-side hopper (I will definitely be getting two), it appears, according to Ben Hom's NYC hopper chart, that there are only two major gaps in NYC 2-bay hoppers left for the 1920s through the early 1950s. These are the 31'6 "postwar" offset-side NYC hopper (which numbered 16,150), and the 10' and 10'6 EXH Common Standard hoppers.

I am aware of the 31'6 offset-side hopper kitbash but am still holding out hope for a kit or model release with a body of correct height.

Is that hopper chart available on line? I didn’t find it. Thanks

how does that 31'6" offset hopper differ from the Ulrich car?

.I might add that it is really nice of RCW and NYCSHS to make the drawings and pictures available on the RCW website! Thank You!

The new car will build into a better detailed model.

the MDT-built 30'6 offset-side hopper
MDT built slightly less than half of the 2055 cuft offset side hopper cars built for the NYCL; RSC built 550, while PSC built 500.

Indeed!

This is one of the oddball cars we have had available in S for many years now:

Bruce, it's in the Files section of the Hindsight2020 group.

Ed, I think the Ulrich car is 30' IL, which is a foot-and-a-half shorter than the Central car. It may also be a different height.

The Central "postwar" offset-side twins were 31'6 IL and 11' EXH. Compare this with the 33' IL and 10'8 EXH AAR standard offset-side twin.

Although the Central rostered the 2nd largest number of freight cars in the U.S. (most of which apparently traveled widely), there are many significant freight car designs that have never been produced in HO. Hopefully that will not be the case within the next few years; I think this new hopper release moves us a little closer to that goal.

You can kitbash a NYC 31'-6" IL offset side hopper by taking 1'-6" out of the middle of an Athearn, Accurail or Atlas model. You get a correct length but the car isn't tall enough. Only 4" height differance between a standard hopper, but you do notice it.

I do plan on doing a kit of these shorter NYC postwar hoppers. The NYCSHS is pulling together drawings and other info for this model.

BTW, why did the NYC build shorter versions?

Frank,

Will you have any P&E decals available or have a source for them? Looking forward to to these!

Matt, they're already available on the RCW site as part of a decal set for Central steel hoppers.

Frank, I'm looking forward to that release as well as the Cudahy reefers as I'd be down for multiples of both.

Phil,

I have a set of those, however they don't include the Peoria & Eastern lettering and I'm assuming the lot number or specific data for this series of hopper.

The three bay hopper with the outside stakes would make the NYC modelers happy too.

Great kitbash! The seam is almost invisible.

Thanks!

Hi Frank and List Members,

Frank, it appears to my eyes that the two center panels on your hoppers are wider than the rest of the panels - and this is correct for the prototype. How exactly did you accomplish this?

Yes, the two center panels are wider. I'll do a blog post on how to make and easy USRA 3-bay hopper.

Frank, it looks great. I may have to find a need for one or two and that’s the trouble with hoppers,  like popcorn you can’t do just a handful
