Tichy P&LE Rebuilt Boxcar.
We had four of the grandkids here last week so the Tichy boxcar project was put of hold. Finally finished it this morning. Here’s a quick rundown of the finish.

I forgot to add; Archer rivets on the ends and I added an Evergreen 2” x 2” strip to the top of the door after I carved off the original one. After the Evergreen strip dried I sanded it down to match the others on the door. The tack boards were also made from Evergreen plastic.

Thanks, I think you were the one that mentioned having to drill out all the holes for the grab irons - I also added a Grandt Line or Tichy NBW above each. Thankfully I have a small battery powered drill to make that task easier.

Fine looking car, Charlie. I like the weathering and especially the placard boards and route card boards. I, too, like ART Yellow for changing FCR shades, as it’s not a bright as most other freight car yellows.

Charlie,
Outstanding build of the Tichy kit. Really like the faded color and will have to try to reproduce with acrylics when I finally build my kit. -- Ken Adams Omicron may come and go but I still live in splendid Shelter In Place solitude Location: About half way up Walnut Creek Owner PlasticFreightCarBuilders@groups.io |

Thanks for the kind comments; the instructions have a date of 1988 and I think this must be the third Tichy boxcar I’ve built. I remember the first one I lettered for the original owner but later found out it was too early for my 1954 layout and sold it off. Second one was correctly lettered for my era as a P&LE car but it to found its was to another owner. This one I’ll keep The National Scale Car decals were extremely accurate for the prototype down to the little triangles in the lower left corners. The NYC sheet is a bargain as it does several prototype boxcars. The Smokebox Graphics reweight set is also very nice. I plan to ‘reweigh’ some more cars today. |

Remarkable weathering and realism Charlie. I'm not sure I recognize those unique looking trucks but would like to identify them. I am quite sure we have none in S but with 3D printing it's tempting. Chris Rooney

Chris Rooney wrote: "I'm not sure I recognize those unique looking trucks but would like to identify them." Nothing unusual about them - they're Andrews trucks. "I am quite sure we have none in S but with 3D printing it's tempting." Quick google search turned these up. Ben Hom |

Chris Rooney laments:
...those unique looking trucks... I am quite sure we have none in SAnd Ben points out the cast metal Andrews trucks from Wiseman. S Helper Service/MTH/Scale Trains have tooling for a USRA Andrews truck as well, and while it is currently OOP, there were tens of thousands of them produced and put under a range of those RTR cars. I also like the old Northeastern Andrews that were produced way back. S's larger void, of course, is a lack of a range of rebuilt box cars, as the SHS car is only a stand-in, with ends from the single-sheathed car on an unmodified height car: that combination simply never existed. The side sills are entirely too shallow to faithfully represent the characteristic LOOK of the class of prototypes. If you squint, you might be able to call it a Frisco rebuild. Earl Tuson |
