HO scale shingles
Gary McMills
I am building several company houses in HO scale and I would like to model them with shingles for their roofs. Is there a manufacturer that makes nice scale shingles in HO scale ? best regards, Gary McMills - Vicksburg Miss. |

Campbell's at one time made shingles that can in a long roll. As I recall they had glue on the back that you simply moistened. Pat Wade Santa Barbara, CA On Tue, Mar 29, 2022 at 3:48 PM Gary McMills <santafe@...> wrote:

A friend uses brick pattern embossed plastic sheet. His models look great.

Northeastern(I think) makes a sheet of paper shingles assembled so all you need to do is cut to size. I have used on a couple of buildings Joe Binish, New Hope MN On Tue, Mar 29, 2022 at 6:15 PM Patrick Wade <patwadesb@...> wrote:

BTS (Bill's Train Shop) sells seven different styles of shingles all are adhesive backed, reasonably priced, great customer service too. Bud Rindfleisch |

Gary, you didn’t say what type of shingles you are looking for? Shake? Three tab asphalt? Diamond? I’m getting ready to lay down some gray three tab from Minuteman Scale Models on an interlocking tower I’m scratch building, Seth Lakin

Campbell still lists their shingles. They come in a 100’ roll, brown paper random width with dry adhesive back. Lick ‘em and stick ‘em. I use the a lot. They make a fairly nice simulated shingle roof. Part # 200-800 in WALTHERS catalog. Dave Lawler Avon Lake, Ohio

They come in all shapes and sizes in HO. Here's some of the companies who make shingles. PS Campbell's still does and you can order them on line. OK here goes: BTS, BEST, Builders in Scale, Bar Mills, Rail Scale, Fox Scale, KC's Workshop, Carolina Craftsman, Northeastern. Take you pick. Larry Smith

Cambell's shingles are classics in the model railroading community but they seem best for simulating wood shake style shingles but if he's trying to represent asphalt shingles then probably any of the suggestions that Larry mentioned below would be better suited for he'd need.

I hate to stir up trouble with all the references to great looking shingles, but the original email was about company houses. While I believe all the shingles mentioned are nice, company house weren’t always nice. The companies tried to keep the expense of building houses at a minimum, especially remote coal or lumber camp houses. Roll roofing was cheaper and easier to install, hence, many company houses had roll roofing when built. I suggest at least evaluating roll roofing for your company houses.

Steve is correct. these are company houses and usually would use the rolled roofing. I was attempting just to go one step better with the 3 tab black asphalt shingles. Thanks to everyone who helped with their suggestions and I will plow through them today and find an acceptable one. best regards, Gary McMills - Vicksburg MS On 2022-03-29 22:24, Steve Summers via groups.io wrote:

Sorry for jumping on the shingle train.
I use newsprint for rolled roofing. I spray a sheet using a rattle can. Green, primer red, and black are rolled roofing colors I've seen the most. I cut the sheet into strips about three scale feet wide and use rubber cement or canopy glue to install on the roof. I use a black Sharpie marker to add tar lines at the edges of the strips.
Here's an S scale AT&SF tool house I scratchbuilt. I sprayed primer red onto newsprint for the rolled roof material here.

Each tab is 12" long and only 5-3/8" exposed to the weather. That's 1/16 of an actual inch in HO scale. I did a depot roof years ago using .060" Evergreen clapboard siding, scraping the face flatter with a razor blade so the exposed edges weren't as thick and then scribing the tab cuts every 12" on alternate rows... Never again! Most my buildings got roll roofing thereafter. There was a injection molded styrene product, about 2-1/2" x 11" sheet that was accurately scaled, but I forget the manufacturer; Rix, maybe. Dennis Storzek |

Note that 3-tab asphalt shingles weren’t standardized until the 1950s. At that time, they were definitely an “upgrade” that one would expect on the better homes in town…
